BACK OVER PREVENTION
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence
A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the parking assist software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 2, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE25.

2024 Lexus ES Common Problems by Component
9 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
AIR BAGS
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the driver's side airbag cover on the 2024 Lexus ES, specifically noting that the cover is either open or detached. Complaints frequently mention that this occurs at low mileages, with one owner citing approximately 3,072 miles. The symptoms described include the airbag cover being visibly open or detached without apparent external cause. There are no reports of crashes, fires, or loss of control associated with this issue. Buyers should be aware that multiple owners describe this airbag cover concern, which may require inspection or repair.
LANE DEPARTURE
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the lane departure and blind spot monitoring systems in the 2024 Lexus ES. Complaints frequently mention the blind spot indicator failing to activate consistently, with some owners observing variability in the distance at which the warning light engages. One owner notes that the indicator sometimes activates too late, after a vehicle has already passed their bumper. Another owner describes the side mirrors not displaying warning lights for vehicles in the blind spot or when turn signals are engaged, suggesting potential sensor malfunctions. These issues are noted without specific mileage or timeline, and while no crashes are reported, the inconsistent performance of these systems may pose a safety risk.
BACK OVER PREVENTION
1 complaintSafety-relatedThe contact owns a 2024 Lexus ES 300h. The contact stated that while his wife was in reverse (R) and backing up into a parking space at approximately 2 MPH, she crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The contact stated that his wife did not hear the rear collision proximity alarm, and the vehicle did not automatically brake. The contact stated that the other vehicle was not damaged, but the contact's vehicle had damage to the driver's rear bumper and trunk. The contact stated that his wife was able to drive the vehicle away. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure and advised that all collision avoidance sensors were operating normally. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000.
SEAT BELTS (1 complaints)
SEAT BELTS
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2024 Lexus ES 350. The contact stated that while attempting to use the front driver's side seat belt, the seat belt failed to extend as needed, and the contact was unable to use the seat belt. The contact stated that the failure had been occurring intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,100.
SERVICE BRAKES (1 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaintSafety-relatedI was able to reproduce the issue. When accelerating from a stop, but not yet passing 7 mph (typically 3-5mph registering on the speedometer), then suddenly braking, the brakes do not immediately engage, but rather engage after several seconds have passed. The system/vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle did not stop (as the brakes weren't applied) causing a collision. I am able to reproduce the issue in the vehicle. No inspection has yet taken place. No warning lamps or other vehicle messages appeared prior to or following the braking failure and the resulting collision. This undocumented behavior was not noted prior to the failure resulting in a collision. Normal driving conditions would not expose the failure. Limited video is available upon request.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (1 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
1 complaintThe vehicle's speedometer shows an inaccurate reading, up to 7MPH less than the actual speed. This has been verified multiple times, measured against WAZE and a speedometer app. At lower speeds, i.e., less than 30MPH, the divergence between the speedometer and the true speed is 1-3MPH. At medium speeds, between 40-60MPH, the divergence is 5-7MPH. At highway speeds, the speedometer initially shows the same larger divergence but after several minutes starts to converge to within 1-2 MPH of the apps. The convergence disappears shortly after the vehicle slows down. The vehicle was brought into the dealership for repair but they said nothing was wrong. At that time, I was provided a loaner vehicle of the same make and model, and its speedometer matched WAZE perfectly at all speeds. I then contacted Lexus customer service, who opened up a case number. I uploaded photos and videos to Lexus documenting the problem. Lexus has now advised me by telephone (representative was "Israel") that they have closed the case based on what the dealer said, and further, that they will not recognize or rely on a third-party application such as Waze. They refused to provide me with an email or letter confirming this; all I have is a screenshot of the Lexus support platform showing the case has been closed. I believe this is a serious safety issue, and I am shocked that Lexus refuses to acknowledge or repair this. I have attached the photos provided to Lexus, screen shots of the two Lexus support cases, both stating "case closed", and the Lexus dealer invoice showing that the problem was brought to their attention (page 3 of the invoice). I am unable to upload the videos (2 x 1 minute long, one on a city street and one on an interstate) as they are larger than your system allows. If you can provide an alternate method to upload them I will be happy to do so. The vehicle is available for inspection and testing at your convenience. I hope your agency can assist with this issue.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Lexus ES.
