ENGINE

21 complaints

Owners report frequent engine failures in the 2025 GMC Yukon, particularly with the 3.0L Duramax diesel engine. Complaints commonly mention symptoms such as engine knocking, slow acceleration, and vehicles entering "limp mode," often accompanied by warning lights. These issues typically occur at low mileages, around 1,000 to 7,600 miles. Several reports highlight the presence of metal shavings in the oil, indicative of thrust bearing or crankshaft issues, leading to complete engine replacements. Safety implications are noted, as vehicles can lose power suddenly, posing risks during highway driving and potentially leading to hazardous situations.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

10 complaints

Owners report issues with the 2025 GMC Yukon's electrical system, including the infotainment and instrument cluster frequently rebooting while driving, and a loud popping noise from the speakers that startles drivers. Complaints frequently mention the digital instrument cluster going black, which obscures speed visibility, and problems with the wireless charging pad overheating, leading to one reported injury. These issues often occur at low mileage, with some vehicles under 10,000 miles. Safety implications include loss of control due to sudden distractions or system failures, and multiple owners describe incidents where vehicles unexpectedly lose power or propulsion, especially concerning when paired with towing.

10 complaints total1 injury

POWER TRAIN

6 complaints

Owners of the 2025 GMC Yukon frequently report issues related to the powertrain, with multiple complaints describing transmission malfunctions and engine failures. Typical symptoms include sudden loss of engine power, hard shifting, and the vehicle becoming immobile. Some reports note engine misfires and diagnostic codes P0300 and P0301, while others mention catastrophic engine failure with metal shavings found in the oil. These issues often occur at low mileages, with one owner experiencing problems at just 934 miles. Safety implications are significant, as the loss of power during acceleration or at highway speeds poses a risk of collision. Buyers should be aware of these potential problems, especially given the reports of delayed repairs and parts availability.

6 complaints total
UNKNOWN OR OTHER (4 complaints)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

4 complaints

Owners report two primary issues with the 2025 GMC Yukon under the category of unknown or other problems. Multiple owners describe incidents where the panoramic sunroof explodes unexpectedly while driving, with some comparing the noise to a gunshot, posing a potential risk of distraction or startle-induced loss of control. Additionally, there are reports of the Super Cruise system failing to detect road lines, causing the vehicle to veer into adjacent lanes without warning, which has occurred at both highway speeds and on two-lane roads. Another complaint highlights concerns with the rearview camera's low placement, which is said to be obstructed by headlights from vehicles behind, particularly at dawn, dusk, or night, limiting visibility and potentially compromising safety. These issues occur at varying speeds and conditions, but specific mileage or timelines are not consistently noted in the complaints.

4 complaints total
SERVICE BRAKES (4 complaints)

SERVICE BRAKES

4 complaints

Owners report significant brake system issues with the 2025 GMC Yukon, often involving the brake pedal becoming firm and difficult to depress, leading to a failure to stop as intended. Complaints frequently mention warning lights and error messages related to brake assist failure, service ESC, service traction control, and ABS brakes. These issues have been observed in vehicles with mileage as low as 170 to approximately 3,150 miles. Safety implications are evident, as one owner describes narrowly avoiding a serious accident due to brake failure. Additionally, multiple owners note that essential brake components, such as the brake master cylinder and booster, are on national back order, indicating potential delays in repairs.

4 complaints total
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (3 complaints)

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

3 complaints

Owners of the 2025 GMC Yukon report issues related to forward collision avoidance, particularly involving unexpected braking and loss of engine power. One complaint describes the vehicle suddenly stopping while on cruise control without any apparent obstruction, requiring immediate acceleration to avoid a rear-end collision. Another owner experiences intermittent engine power loss during acceleration, often accompanied by a flashing check engine light and misfire-related diagnostic codes, occurring after the vehicle has been driven for 10–45 minutes and at approximately 3,100 to 3,600 miles. These issues pose potential safety risks, particularly in traffic, as they affect vehicle control and acceleration. Buyers should be aware of these reported issues when considering this vehicle.

This has happened twice. Once in November 2025 and then in January 2026. With super cruise engaged while going around a curve super cruse disengages and the steering wheel turns to driving straight. You have about one or two seconds to take control or crash. This happened while driving about 70 mph on interstate I 70 and next on Ohio 122 going about 45 mph. On I 70 it was a gentle curve and on 122 it was a much sharper curve. Super cruse must give a warning that it about to disengage that is much longer than one or two seconds.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

2025-09-08

After less than 2000 miles, the OnStar module failed, which removed the capability for emergency assistance, GPS, advanced cruise control, etc. The part is on back order with no ETA, and it appears, based on my research, that this is a common problem with GM vehicles for the past several years. Not having the emergency assistance phone system available is an extreme safety issue, as there are many areas of the US that do not have adequate cell coverage to get assistance in an emergency. It seems as though GMC does not care.

I am writing as the owner of a new 2025 GMC Yukon XL AT4 VIN: [XXX] , purchase date: 01AUG2025, from Elizabeth City GMC, Elizabeth City, NC. This vehicle, equipped with the 3.0L Duramax diesel engine and Super Cruise hands-free driving assistance, was purchased for safe family travel, including space for my wife, our 21-year-old daughter, and our family dog(s). At approximately 4,300 miles—well within the 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty—this truck suffered a catastrophic right-rear brake failure directly attributable to a dealer-installed GMC-approved Brembo Performance Brake Upgrade Package, resulting in a near-fatal highway incident and profound emotional hardship for my family. On August 9th at 5:30PM roughly, while attempting to park using the vehicle’s Park Assist feature, the system failed to function properly—specifically, it failed to detect a pole at the rear of a parking space, did not slow or brake the vehicle, and was not even aware it would contact the pole. It then collided with the pole. Also, intermittently the forward collision alert system either does not alert for similar circumstances as it just previously did. Seem untrustworthy. Scary. GM's product allegation team (PAC) had all of the necessary information to show the system does not work 100% of the time (I have it all on video and submitted that) and they denied my claim and refused to admit a system failure even when given the videos showing the park assist failing to engage properly ON VIDEO.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
