2020 Genesis G70 Common Problems by Component
12 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2020 Genesis G70 report issues primarily related to the vehicle's electrical system. One owner describes a significant safety incident where the vehicle caught fire while parked, resulting in total loss of the car and damage to nearby property. This incident occurred without prior warning signs during a short drive. Another owner reports multiple dashboard warning lights, including traction control, ABS, Auto Hold, and motion sensor, activating while driving, with the vehicle yet to be diagnosed or repaired. These issues are noted at approximately 57,146 miles. The fire incident highlights a potential safety risk, although no recall is mentioned for this specific model.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
2 complaintsOwners of the 2020 Genesis G70 report issues related to a high-pressure fuel pump defect, with symptoms such as a persistent check engine light, vehicle hesitation, jerking, and strong gasoline odors both inside and outside the car. These issues are linked to recall 24V-528, and complaints frequently mention that symptoms appear even after recall service is marked completed, typically within 10 months. Safety concerns are significant, with reports of potential fuel leaks and fire hazards, as well as the need to drive long distances despite the vehicle's unsafe condition. Additionally, owners face challenges obtaining timely recall service due to parts unavailability at several dealerships. This information is crucial for used car buyers to consider potential repair needs and safety risks.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
1 complaintVehicle's high pressure fuel pump malfunctioned while driving causing the car's speed to decrease erratically causing a safety risk. The local Genesis dealer acknowledges that the high pressure fuel pump needs to be replaced and is the subject of a recall, but is requiring me to pay for the repair despite the recall notice stating that: ". . . THE HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WILL ALSO BE REPLACED. THIS REMEDY WILL BE OFFERED AT NO COST TO OWNERS FOR ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE AFFECTED VEHICLES ARE STILL COVERED UNDER HYUNDAI/GENESIS NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY."

The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
STEERING (1 complaints)
STEERING
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2020 Genesis G70. The contact stated while driving at 2-3 MPH around a curve, the contact steered to the left and the vehicle made an abnormal sound. While turning left, the front passenger's side tire inadvertently moved to the right. The vehicle stopped and failed to move. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the inner tie rod had fractured and detached. The contact was informed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V447000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

SUSPENSION (1 complaints)
SUSPENSION
1 complaintOn Saturday July 23, 2022 around 6p.m. I was driving up Midvale Ave in Philadelphia, Pa, I hit a pothole and on the passenger side the strut shatter into pieces. I drove in the next day to Pep Boys to diagnosis the problem and the should me that the steering /suspension evaluation was done. I left because that had no idea when they could get the part for the car. (see attached pictures)
TIRES (1 complaints)
TIRES
1 complaintBoth Michelin 225/40 ZR 19 Pilot Sport 4S front tires had severe "chunking", or tread peeling, on them after only 8,000 miles. Atlantic Tire (Bayamon, Puerto Rico), the sole distributor and service center of Michelin in Puerto Rico, informed me that approximately 30 other Genesis G70's had recently made warranty claims regarding the front tires with severe "chunking". They informed me not to drive the vehicle until the tires are replaced.
WHEELS (1 complaints)
WHEELS
1 complaintOn or about May 2022, and after on 8,000 miles driven, noticed severe "chunking", or tread peeling, on both front tires of my 2020 Genesis G70 purchased October 2020 from Genesis Puerto Rico, located at Plaza Las Americas, San Juan, Puerto Rico. The tread on both tires was coming apart to the point where you could see the metal underneath the treads. Driving this vehicle at high speeds without noticing the defect could have resulted in a blown tire and a potentially serious accident. By the time I noticed the issue, it was already at a relatively severe state, thus the onset of the symptoms is unknown, however likely sometime 2021. I took the car to the dealership. They referred me to a third party tire distributor (Atlantic Tires, Bayamon, Puerto Rico). This third party distributor indicated that approximately 30 different Genesis G70's had recently made warranty claims with the same severe chunking on both front tires. They believe all the tires in that lot purchased for the Genesis G70's have the same manufacturer's defect. The third party tire distributor confirmed this to be a defect of the tire advised me not to drive the vehicle anymore until replacing the tires. This is in San Juan, Puerto Rico, there is only one Genesis dealership on the whole island, thus all the G70's with the defect were sold from that one location. The dealership has also been aware of the defect and has neglected to inform the potentially affected customers and/or report this safety defect to the NHTSA. My girlfriend primarily drives the vehicle and she would never have noticed the tire damage. The tires in question are Michelin tires, however, Michelin does not have formal representation in Puerto Rico and Atlantic Tire serves as their distributor in Puerto Rico.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Genesis G70.
