Pacifica electrical complaints by model year
The 2018 model year has the most electrical complaints by a wide margin, with 246 and the highest rate per vehicle sold. It also carries the most fire and crash reports. The 2021 year is the second problem spot, with a higher rate than the years around it. The 2019 and 2020 vans sit in the middle, with the same shutdown pattern. The 2022 and 2023 years have fewer complaints. The 2024 and 2025 years show very few, and 2026 shows none, but those vans have had little time to collect complaints, so low counts there do not make them safer.

Owner complaints filed with NHTSA under electrical system. Newer model years have had less time to collect complaints.
What goes wrong
The van shutting off while it is moving is the failure that runs through these complaints. A warning such as "Service Charging System" or "Stop Safely" appears, power drops, and the van stalls at a light or on the highway. Some vans will not restart or will not shift out of park. Many reports involve the plug-in hybrid. Others describe screens going black, wipers and lights running on their own, and sliding doors that misbehave. Dealers often find no stored fault. Electrical problems make up 563 of the model's 2387 complaints, about a quarter.
The risk is real. Fire is the most serious pattern, and it centers on 2018, where 12 complaints involve fire. Reports include plug-in hybrids burning in garages and driveways, some while charging, and engine-bay fires that start with a burning smell and smoke from the hood or vents. Stalls at speed have led to crashes, including a curb strike and a collision during a left turn. One owner says the van lost steering and brake assist. Some vans were towed away, and one burned so badly that nothing was salvageable.
Symptoms owners report
Power loss while driving
The van shuts off or drops into limp mode with a turtle icon, often on the highway and sometimes at 70 to 75 mph. Some vans shift into park by themselves, and some will not restart. Dealers often find no cause.
Service Charging System warning
A "Service Charging System" message, sometimes with a flashing battery light, comes before many hybrid shutdowns. Owners report failed hybrid batteries, weak 12-volt or auxiliary batteries, and a hybrid that will not run on battery even at full charge.
Fire and smoke
Owners report smoke and flames from the engine bay, a battery smoking under the floor while plugged in, a cabin fire near the second row, and garage fires. One 2021 plug-in hybrid burned while not charging.
Start/stop and battery faults
Repeated start/stop warnings, clicking no-starts, and dead batteries show up in several years. One owner had a starter fail after repeated auto stop-start shutdowns. Another had batteries replaced and still saw the warning return.
Screens, sensors and doors
Uconnect screens go black or freeze, and cameras, climate control and windows drop out with them. Sliding doors show false open warnings, stop locking, or fail entirely. One owner says a power door closed on a child's hand. Blind spot sensors sometimes miss obstacles.
When the problems start
Mileages in the complaints cover a wide range, so there is no safe window. A new van caught fire at 58 miles, and a 2024 van failed with under 1000 miles. One 2018 owner had the first power loss at about 15,000 miles, and another at 8,000. A 2019 fire happened at about 23,000 miles. A used 2018 bought with 39000 miles stalled repeatedly.
Repairs and recalls
Repeat dealer visits with no clear fix are common in the reports. Replacements mentioned include 12-volt batteries, a hybrid battery, a battery coolant hose, and an inverter module. One owner paid $2700 after a stall left the van unable to restart. Another says the dealer charged for recall work. Federal recall records list six electrical recalls. They include plug-in hybrid transmission wiring connector software (2018 to 2020), a loose battery ground on stop/start vans (2018 and 2019), and a 12-volt isolator post on plug-in hybrids (2018 and 2019). Independent repair-cost data puts yearly repairs for the model at $647.

Checking a used Pacifica for electrical problems
- Run the VIN on the NHTSA recall site and confirm the plug-in hybrid wiring, battery ground and isolator post recalls were completed.
- Ask for service records showing 12-volt or hybrid battery replacements, and walk away if the same warning keeps returning.
- Start the van cold, then drive it on the highway and watch for Service Charging System or turtle warnings.
- Test every screen, camera, sensor, and sliding door, including the hands-free opener, for freezing, false alerts, or failure.
- Check for burning smells, melted plastic, or scorched wiring under the hood and beneath the sliding doors.
- On a plug-in hybrid, ask how it was charged and whether any fire or battery fault was ever reported.
6 electrical recalls cover the Chrysler Pacifica. A VIN check shows whether the car you're looking at had its recall work done, plus accident and title history.
Chrysler Pacifica Electrical Problems: common questions
- Which Chrysler Pacifica years have the most electrical problems?
- The 2018 model year has the most electrical complaints and the highest rate per vehicle sold, along with the most fire reports. The 2021 year also runs high. The 2019 and 2020 vans show the same shutdown pattern. Newer years have fewer complaints partly because they have had less time to collect them.
- Is a Pacifica safe to drive with electrical warnings?
- Treat a Service Charging System, Stop Safely, or turtle warning as serious. Owners report these leading to sudden shutdowns on highways and in traffic, and some led to crashes. Several owners also report steering and brake assist loss after power dropped. Get the van checked before driving it.
- Is there a recall for Pacifica electrical problems?
- Federal recall records list six electrical recalls. They include plug-in hybrid transmission wiring connector software, a loose battery ground on stop/start vans, and a 12-volt isolator post on plug-in hybrids. Check the VIN, because coverage depends on model year and equipment.
- How much does it cost to fix Pacifica electrical problems?
- The data gives no single price. Independent repair-cost data estimates $647 per year in repairs for the model overall. One owner reports paying $2700 after a stall. Owners also report battery and inverter module replacements, and some repairs happen under warranty or recall.
- Can a Pacifica Hybrid catch fire while charging?
- Some owners report plug-in hybrids burning in garages and driveways overnight while charging. One 2021 owner reports a fire while the van was not charging. Fire reports are most common on 2018 models. Check recall status and ask the seller about any battery faults.
