2021 Cadillac XT6 Common Problems by Component
18 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
BACK OVER PREVENTION
4 complaintsOwners of the 2021 Cadillac XT6 report recurring issues with the back-over prevention system, particularly with the rear-view camera. Complaints frequently mention the camera intermittently displaying a blank image or failing to show the correct surroundings while reversing. Some owners report messages like "Park Assist Block" appearing on the instrument panel, indicating sensor issues. These problems are noted at mileages ranging from approximately 7,000 to 33,000 miles. Although no accidents are reported, the failure to display accurate rear-view images presents a potential safety risk, especially when pedestrians are present. These issues are sometimes linked to a recall, but repairs are not always completed, as parts may be unavailable.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
3 complaintsOwners report recurring issues with the 2021 Cadillac XT6's backup camera system, even after recall repairs, with complaints of the camera intermittently cutting to a black screen with a crossed-out camera icon. This issue is noted as a safety concern due to reliance on the camera for visibility while reversing, especially given the vehicle's rear pillar design. Another reported problem involves the vehicle's engine failing to restart after idling, associated with a non-responsive "Press to Start" button, suggesting potential electrical or fuel system failures at under 27,000 miles. These issues present safety implications, such as limited visibility and potential engine failure, which prospective buyers should consider.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
3 complaintsOwners of the 2021 Cadillac XT6 report several distinct issues. One common complaint involves the vehicle stumbling during acceleration from a stop, which occurs intermittently and has been noted to increase in frequency over time, potentially posing a safety risk during maneuvers like left-hand turns. Another issue involves the abrupt failure of front and rear vision cameras, with at least one owner indicating a mix-up regarding recall repairs. Additionally, there is a report of a sunroof spontaneously shattering while driving on the highway, described as a loud pop without external impact. These complaints highlight potential safety implications, particularly with the acceleration and sunroof issues, and suggest prospective buyers should verify the resolution of any outstanding recalls or repairs.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM (2 complaints)
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
2 complaintsOwners of the 2021 Cadillac XT6 report issues with the fuel pump control module, describing it as faulty and prone to failure. Complaints frequently mention the module failing within months of purchase, leading to the vehicle abruptly stopping without warning. This issue has reportedly occurred multiple times, with one owner experiencing failures in traffic and near an elementary school, raising potential safety concerns. The symptoms include the vehicle shuddering, the engine light activating, and a sudden loss of power. These incidents typically occur shortly after the vehicle is acquired, suggesting a pattern of early failure. Buyers should be aware of the potential for unexpected vehicle stoppage due to this component.
POWER TRAIN (1 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
1 complaintCadillac XT6 – VIN: [XXX] echanical Failures, Ignored Transmission Recall(s), and Dealer Negligence I write this letter to formally place General Motors Company on notice of a pattern of serious mechanical failures, ignored safety recalls, and dealership indifference involving my Cadillac XT6, referenced above. This vehicle has been presented to Sam Leman Cadillac of Champaign on multiple occasions for mechanical issues, including—but not limited to—cooling system failures, thermostat defects, persistent check-engine warnings, and abnormal vehicle operation. Service records confirm repeated interventions, temporary fixes, and diagnostic acknowledgments without meaningful long-term resolution. More alarming, however, is the dealership’s failure to appropriately address and disclose known transmission recalls and other safety recalls applicable to this vehicle. Despite GM’s documented awareness of widespread transmission issues affecting similarly situated vehicles, the dealership elected to either minimize, ignore, or defer corrective action—placing convenience and cost avoidance above consumer safety. This conduct raises serious concerns, including: •Failure to act on known manufacturer defects •Failure to honor GM’s recall and safety obligations •Repeated return of a vehicle to service despite unresolved defects •A pattern of repairs that suggests systemic failure, not isolated incidents •Improper shifting of financial responsibility to the consumer for manufacturer-caused defects Consumers do not purchase Cadillac vehicles with the expectation of serving as unpaid beta testers for unresolved engineering flaws. Nor should they be forced to navigate a maze of denials and deflections when defects arise that GM already knows exist. This is not a maintenance issue—it is a manufacturer and dealer accountability issue. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2021 Cadillac XT6. The contact stated that while sitting inside the vehicle, the vehicle felt unbalanced. Upon inspection, the contact noticed that the H-pipe was leaning more to the right side. The H-pipe was not centered as intended. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that in the past, while the vehicle was serviced, no one had noticed that the H-pipe was off-center. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 37,000.
STEERING (1 complaints)
STEERING
1 complaint1)The display on dash reads upon start up, “Steering Assist Reduced”. 2)There is no Engine temperature readout displayed on cluster. 3)When the vehicle is turned off, the coolant fan stays running for a few minutes at full speed. All of these issues are correlated. Also, many XT5’s & XT6’s have had this issue in the past.
ENGINE (1 complaints)
ENGINE
1 complaintThe vehicle's check engine light came on late afternoon and then started with a delayed turn over, but not actually starting thr following day. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealership. The technician and service advisor commented immediately that it is likely the fuel pump control module. With the commentary about the likely cause was that this is a widespread issue among GM vehicles. Thankfully, the vehicle was at home when it stopped starting but the transition from check engine to stopping operation was almost immediate.

SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaintFront brake vibration, alarming grinding/rubbing/screeching sound each and every time service brakes are applied. Dealer claims this is a known GM problem with no fix available. I have purchased two Cadillacs Xt6 and Xt5 May 2021. Both vehicles have the same problem. Wife will not drive the new Cadillac. Service bulletin published sbout this same problem, December 2020. Still no resolution, June 2021.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Cadillac XT6.
