POWER TRAIN

4 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Cadillac XT4 frequently report issues with the vehicle's 9-speed automatic transmission not engaging 9th gear automatically, requiring manual intervention to shift properly. Complaints also describe a lack of smooth shifting in the lower gears (1-3) during deceleration, with a jerking sensation as if a clutch is popping. These transmission issues are reported to occur consistently from the time of purchase, with one vehicle having fewer than 5,000 miles. One owner also reports a separate incident where the vehicle unexpectedly powers off while driving, citing a potential battery or alternator issue. No crashes or fires are reported in these complaints, but the sudden loss of power while driving may pose a safety risk.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

2 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Cadillac XT4 report issues with the forward collision avoidance system, specifically involving unexpected braking events. Complaints frequently mention the vehicle engaging in phantom braking, where the car unexpectedly brakes without an apparent obstacle, even at freeway speeds. These incidents typically occur around 3,000 miles of usage. Safety implications are notable, as sudden stops on the freeway could increase the risk of rear-end collisions. Prospective buyers should be aware of these reports, as owners describe the system as potentially hazardous when it misinterprets driving conditions.

2 complaints total

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the electrical system of the 2023 Cadillac XT4, primarily involving the infotainment system and turn signal functionality. Complaints frequently mention that the infotainment system produces no sound and that turn indicator sounds are absent, which also affects the auto stop function. These issues have required owners to manually reset the system to restore functionality. Additionally, the turn signal canceler fails to work after left-hand turns. Safety implications are noted due to the lack of audible turn signals, which could potentially lead to miscommunication with other drivers. The complaints do not specify mileage, but the issues have occurred on multiple occasions for the affected vehicles.

Auto Emergency Braking {AEB} applies itself without any operator input and without cause for the brakes to engage, it can happen at any time at any speed without warning and throws everyone and everything in the vehicle abruptly forward as if you were in a crash, this is a very problematic issue that can make the vehicle at slow speeds to be rear ended because of the abrupt stop and also to be out of control at high speeds and causing severe injuries or death !!!! I am not the only person that has had this issue !!!!

My 2023 XT4 had a fuel module failure. I was driving along a busy highway at 50 MPH when i lost complete power. Now i see on the Cadillac forum, many people are having problems with the Cadillac XT4. According to the towing company it happens all the times. I also read on the forum other people were told this too by towing companies. This is Dangerous and you could be left in the middle of a intersection and be T-boned. Shame on Cadillac for not caring. We have another XT4 in the household and now are afraid to drive. My car is currently being repaired. so at this time i do not have a repair invoice. Its still at Sheehan Cadillac Pompano Beach fla.

Rear back half of sunroof exploded. I removed the glass so it would not fly out and hit other cars or people. It could have been very dangerous if the sunroof was open when it shattered.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
