2024 BMW 2-Series Common Problems by Component
17 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
SERVICE BRAKES
4 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report significant braking issues with the 2024 BMW 2-Series, including brake failures that have led to one crash. Complaints frequently mention a recall related to missing parts in the braking system, which affects emergency braking and overall brake function, with no current fix available from BMW. Symptoms described by owners include the car not stopping when the brake pedal is pressed and longer stopping distances. These problems are reported in vehicles with very low mileage, around 100 miles, and some owners have experienced multiple unresolved service visits. The safety implications are severe, as one incident involved a vehicle crashing into a garage door due to brake failure.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
3 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 BMW 2-Series report issues related to unexpected sunroof explosions and vehicle control anomalies. One complaint describes a sunroof shattering while driving, with glass pieces directed upwards, suggesting potential safety risks if the sunroof liner is open. Another report involves a crash where a vehicle in electric mode unexpectedly accelerated into a parking garage wall, with brakes failing to stop the car and airbags not deploying, resulting in an injury. Additionally, an owner mentions receiving an "inability to drive" message at highway speeds, leading to steering difficulties and requiring towing. These incidents typically occur within the first 1.5 years of vehicle use and raise safety concerns regarding potential loss of control and vehicle integrity.
BACK OVER PREVENTION
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 BMW 2-Series report issues with the back over prevention system, specifically noting failures in the rear cross traffic alert functionality. Complaints frequently mention that the system does not provide timely audible warnings for approaching vehicles, objects, or pedestrians when reversing. Some owners describe that alerts only trigger if an approaching vehicle exceeds 7 mph, and even then, the warning comes too late to effectively avoid a collision. These issues are reported from the time of purchase, indicating they may be present from the outset. Safety implications include the potential for collisions due to insufficient warning time, with owners expressing dissatisfaction with the system's effectiveness.

During the crash the vehicle sustained extensive damages to the rear passenger’s side vehicle and the door. The stone column was also damaged. No injuries were reported. A Police Report was taken at the scene. The vehicle was first driven to the residence and then to the body shop the following day. STRUCTURE
1 complaintI was driving on an empty highway at about 55 mph and all of a sudden heard a loud bang, after i pulled over i saw that my sunroof was shattered, bmw declined a warranty on it but the car had only 3k miles on it, prior to that accident i was hearing some squeaking noises from my sunroof when it was in fully closed position. After taking it to the dealership not only they declined on the warranty but they failed to investigate and explain the cause stating it was probably the rock hit the glass the caused the problem, i taped the sunroof after it shattered and after i was picking up the car the tape was still there and was at the same condition prior leaving the car there, so that tells me that they didn't even chacket it.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
