ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

7 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Audi Q5 frequently report issues with the electrical system, particularly involving the gateway system that controls communication within the vehicle. Symptoms include dashboard lights activating unexpectedly, loss of control over the vehicle, and inability to shift gears, with one report noting a complete vehicle stop on a freeway. Complaints also highlight unresolved recall issues related to the battery, which pose a potential fire risk and limit the ability to charge the vehicle externally. These problems are often reported at relatively low mileages, around 4,000 to 5,000 miles. Safety implications are significant, as some owners describe situations where the vehicle becomes immobilized, increasing the risk of accidents.

7 complaints total

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

6 complaints

Owners report two primary issues with the forward collision avoidance systems in the 2024 Audi Q5. The first involves the adaptive cruise control unexpectedly reducing speed from highway limits to as low as 20 mph without warning, particularly when passing speed limit signs, which could lead to rear-end collisions. The second issue is with the Audi Pre-Sense system erroneously engaging emergency braking during left turns or when driving straight, causing the vehicle to abruptly stop and stall, sometimes in intersections or traffic, posing a risk of collision. Complaints frequently mention these issues occurring within the first six months of ownership, and multiple owners have expressed concerns about their safety due to these unexpected braking events.

6 complaints total

SERVICE BRAKES

5 complaints

Owners report two main issues with the 2024 Audi Q5's service brakes. The first is premature rotor wear, with one owner noting the issue within 12 months of ownership, suggesting possible manufacturing or material defects. The second, more prevalent issue involves the Audi Pre Sense system, which multiple owners describe as causing sudden, uncommanded braking on clear roads due to false obstacle detection. This problem is documented at various mileage points, including at 11,743 miles, and poses a safety risk by potentially leading to rear-end collisions or loss of control. Complaints indicate that dealer responses have varied, with some attempts at sensitivity adjustments and reconfigurations, though the issue often persists.

STRUCTURE (2 complaints)

STRUCTURE

2 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Audi Q5 report issues with the automatic tailgate's foot sensing device, which can unintentionally activate and cause the liftgate to close unexpectedly while loading or unloading items. This malfunction occurs even when the key is on the person, and the vehicle emits a beeping sound, but the source is unclear until the liftgate begins to close. Complaints consistently describe the tailgate closing without detecting a person or object in its path, requiring significant force to stop it manually. These incidents are noted from the first day of ownership and have occurred multiple times, with no specific mileage mentioned. Safety concerns arise as owners have to quickly move to avoid potential injury from the closing liftgate.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER (2 complaints)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

2 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Audi Q5 report issues with the "foot assist" motion detection system for the hatchback, which can cause the hatch to open or close unintentionally. This malfunction has led to physical injuries, including a reported incident where the hatch closed on a child's head, resulting in bruising. Additionally, the hatch has pinned individuals against surfaces, indicating potential safety risks. Another complaint involves a persistent error with the Audi connect installation, although it does not specify any safety implications. These issues are reported at varying mileages, with one noted at 11,910 miles.

The contact owns a 2024 Audi Q5E. The contact stated while driving at approximately 35 MPH, the Lane Keep Assist erroneously corrected the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to make a drastic right turn onto a side street. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring mostly while driving near a turn lane or a side street located on the left or the right sides of the vehicle. The contact stated that there was a message advising the driver to take control of the vehicle displayed after the failure. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and the contact was advised that the failure was a known software failure. The failure mileage was 9,589.

TIRES

Purchased 2024 brand new Audi Q5 with Kumho tires - KL33  235\55R19 from manufacturer Dec 2023. Have the car serviced at the Audi dealership per service recommendation. Tires were inspected and deemed roadworthy Jan 2025. By [XXX] (15 months post new purchase of vehicle) rear tire shredded on highway due to a known detreading issue with the Kumho tires. Causing pulling of vehicle into the central lane on highway. No accident or fatalities. Had emergency replacement of the affected tire and evaluation of the other three tires. It is noted during inspection of the three tires were also worn down atypically for the mileage (19,600). The rear tire on the driver side was also noted to not pass inspection due to early defective wear. All tires replaced, no accountability from dealership.  According to the manufacturer warranty these tires would have all been replaced if bought personally (within 5 years of purchase, or under 60,000) , due to the fact the tires came with the vehicle there is no recourse per Audi dealership. Upon further investigation of Kuhmo tires there appears to be a known component regarding detreading of the tires especially with highway road speeds that has caused fatal accidents. Unable to reach Kuhmo tires to discuss accountability regarding gap in warranty coverage  and defective tires. Per Audi employee this is a known issue with Audi and the tire company where they would rather pay off damages than correct the problem due to profit loss. My safety and others on the road were put in peril due to placing unsafe tires with known detreading issues on new cars, without any place for recourse when the said defective tires fail. Lack of consideration from Kuhmo tire company and Audi has placed a large population of car owners at risk, as Audi unable to get Continental tires knowingly and willingly opted for cheaper tires with known issues. Looking for accountability from these corporations. Will continue to reach out to Kuhmo for recourse.  INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2025-07-01

In July 2025, I received Recall 93AA (24V988 / 25V080) regarding a defect in the high-voltage battery of my 2024 Audi Q5 Hybrid. The recall states there is a risk of thermal overload and possible fire. I brought the car to the authorized dealer on August 13, 2025, where my service advisor confirmed there was no available repair. I called again on October 14, 2025, and was told there is still no remedy. Audi’s instructions prohibit charging the vehicle until the recall is resolved, which completely disables the hybrid system. This has made the car partially unusable and unsafe to operate as intended. It has been over three months since the recall notice, and no timeline for a fix has been provided by either Audi Corporate or the dealer. The defect has been acknowledged by Audi but remains unresolved, representing an unreasonable delay in remedy for a safety-related issue.

SUSPENSION (1 complaints)

SUSPENSION

4 weeks ago, I noted the front of the vehicle sitting lower than the rear. When it was started, a warning message indicated air suspension failure, then an attempt to correct. The front raised itself and the warning stopped. I took it to the dealer for a charging recall the next day and told them about it, but nothing was found. A month later, yesterday, the same thing occurred, and I took it to the dealer again today.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
