Consequence
An air bag that does not deploy properly in a crash increases the risk of injury.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and tighten the bolts securing the passenger air bag, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 5, 2024. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10254.

2024 Volvo S60 Common Problems by Component
16 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
4 complaintsOwners report issues with the 2024 Volvo S60's electrical system, particularly concerning the infotainment and audio systems. Complaints frequently mention the multimedia screen going blank and intermittent loss of all vehicle audio alerts, including critical safety notifications like turn signals and blind spot monitoring. These issues often require a system reboot, which some describe as distracting and unsafe while driving. The problems are noted at various mileages, with one owner specifically mentioning occurrences around 13,000 miles. Safety implications are highlighted, as the failures can result in loss of access to essential safety features and unpredictable vehicle behavior, especially at low speeds or when braking.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
4 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Volvo S60 frequently report issues with the vehicle's audio system and backup cameras. A common complaint is the unexpected loss of all audio, including turn signal sounds, which poses a safety concern. Additionally, multiple owners describe problems with the backup camera's visibility in low-light conditions, rendering it ineffective at night. Some owners also note intermittent failures of the backup camera when shifting into reverse. These issues persist despite dealership visits, and there is mention of Volvo's awareness of the problems, yet no resolution has been provided. Safety concerns are highlighted, particularly in scenarios requiring reliable camera functionality for parking and reversing.
SERVICE BRAKES
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 Volvo S60 report incidents of unintended acceleration combined with brake failure, leading to crashes. These complaints describe scenarios where the vehicle accelerates unexpectedly while the brakes are engaged, with one owner noting the car lurched forward at a stoplight. In both cases, there is a lack of warning lights, and the incidents occur at low mileage, around 4,000 miles. The safety implications are significant, as both reports involve crashes, although no injuries or airbag deployments are confirmed. Prospective buyers should be aware of these patterns when considering this model.
STEERING (2 complaints)
STEERING
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the Automatic Intervention Collision Avoidance system in the 2024 Volvo S60, specifically involving unexpected and unnecessary activations. Symptoms described include sudden and forceful steering wheel movements and potential brake application, typically occurring during freeway exits or on roads with slight curves. These incidents create dangerous situations, such as swerving into adjacent lanes or towards oncoming traffic, even when the road ahead is clear. Both complaints involve rental vehicles, but no specific mileage or timeline patterns are evident. Safety implications include the risk of loss of control and potential collisions due to these unexpected interventions.

1 complaintSafety-relatedWhen my son got a car last December, we bought him a 2024 Volvo s60, primarily for the safety features. Since we have had the vehicle, Volvo has had a lot of issues with their infotainment system. He has contacted them many times and I had started to keep a record of how often it would glitch. If it was just music not working, no big deal. But sometimes it was the backup camera too and once the heat. He recently had a car accident. He is okay (of course shaken up) but it was a bad situation. A van had dropped a lot of items. Plumbing and metal shelving. There was a pick up who was trying to avoid it. My son tried to avoid the pick up unsuccessfully but partially because his wheels landed on metal shelving and he was sliding on the road. The accident report captured this. His car was totaled. The purpose of this email is that the car was totaled, as even though he was braking as hard as he could, his tire was sliding on that shelving so he did have quite a hard impact. Not one safety feature worked on this vehicle, not the SOS, not the forward, not the airbags. My intuition is telling me it's all related to these many issues with the electronics in this car (recharge models have had this issue and been recalled). Before they dispose of the vehicle I wanted to consult with an attorney to see if we have any recourse with Volvo, especially because safety is why we bought the car. It is currently at the body shop. The infotainment has had an issue forever.

1 complaintThe rear back-up camera does not work. This occurs at least a few times a week with routine, daily driving. The vehicle starts normal and software loads normal; however, upon shifting to reverse, the camera is not displayed. Instead, I receive an error message stating that the camera is not available. My vehicle already has the recall for updated software that was intended to fix the camera issue (software version 3.5.24); however, the issue is worse with this software version. On previous versions, this issue occurred only a couple times a month. It not happens weekly.
FUEL SYSTEM (1 complaints)
FUEL SYSTEM
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2024 Volvo S60. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, a message stating that the propulsion system was reduced was displayed, and the vehicle came to a complete stop in the middle of the road, nearly causing a crash. Additionally, the steering wheel seized, the gear shift indicator light turned off, and the four wheels seized while the engine continued to run. A Police Officer arrived at the scene and directed traffic to prevent a crash. The vehicle was towed to the nearest dealer, where it was diagnosed with fuel pump failure. The dealer replaced the fuel pump and informed the contact that the vehicle had been repaired. The contact informed the dealer that he felt unsafe driving the vehicle because the steering wheel and the wheel had seized while the engine was still running, which prevented the contact from pulling to the side of the road. The dealer informed the contact that no other failure was found and that the vehicle operated as designed. The dealer towed the vehicle to the residence, and the contact had not driven the vehicle since the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and of the safety concerns but advised the contact that the diagnostic report from the dealer only showed a failure with the fuel pump. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Volvo S60.
