2022 Volvo S60 Common Problems by Component
14 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
3 complaintsOwners report several electrical issues with the 2022 Volvo S60. A common problem involves the indirect TPMS system falsely indicating low tire pressure, often leading drivers to disregard alerts. Another frequent complaint is the main center display going blank randomly, sometimes accompanied by a loud squealing sound, which disrupts HVAC and audio functions. Additionally, some owners describe the vehicle shutting off unexpectedly while driving, with warning lamps indicating various system failures. These issues appear to occur across a range of mileages and have significant safety implications, particularly when the car shuts off at highway speeds.
STEERING
2 complaintsOwners report issues related to the steering and tire performance of the 2022 Volvo S60. One complaint mentions a combination of power steering, brakes, battery, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) without further detail. Another owner describes frequent tire replacements due to damage from potholes, attributing this to the low-profile tires (235/40R19) fitted on the vehicle, which are perceived to be more vulnerable to road impacts. This owner has experienced these issues at approximately 11,000 miles. While there are no direct reports of crashes or loss of control, the tire damage could suggest potential safety concerns if not addressed.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
2 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Volvo S60 report issues related to the fuel/propulsion system, particularly involving unexpected vehicle behavior. One complaint describes a situation where the vehicle, after a 40k service, displays a turtle icon and check engine light, limiting speed to 25 mph, which could pose a risk on faster roads. Another complaint outlines an intermittent issue when transitioning from reverse to drive, where the vehicle initially fails to move and then unexpectedly accelerates forcefully. Both complaints highlight concerns at different mileage points, with one occurring shortly after a routine service. These issues suggest potential safety implications, including the risk of rear-end collisions and loss of vehicle control, particularly during acceleration.
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the power train of the 2022 Volvo S60, specifically related to transmission performance and loss of motive power. Complaints frequently mention the transmission not shifting properly, particularly between second and third gear, and the presence of warning lights such as the check engine light and a transmission service warning. In one case, a loss of communication with control modules led to a complete halt while reversing, with the vehicle unable to move until the ignition was cycled. This issue was noted at a very low mileage of approximately 160 miles. Safety implications include sudden braking and potential loss of control, which could increase the risk of accidents. Multiple owners indicate these problems occur early in the vehicle's life, suggesting potential reliability concerns for prospective buyers.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER (1 complaints)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
1 complaintI reported this issue last year when my car was just barely outside of the extended service plan agreement we had on the car. I had called the dealership with similar issues as well way before hand. My infotainment system which controls all and I mean all of the safety features I paid/am still paying for no longer works. It’s a known issue with Volvo they know and so do other mechanics. Prior to this my instrument panel completely blanked out:went black for a minute while driving. Thankfully the car never shut off but I called them they said see if it happens again and that was that. I only really have my blindspot indicators working everything else doesn’t. With that I lost access to my back up camera, and proximity sensors
AIR BAGS (1 complaints)
AIR BAGS
1 complaintI purchased a vehicle from a dealership that was aware of faulty airbags that was returned to dealership from another consumer. I discovered the issue a few months later when airbag warning light appeared and had it repaired which included steering wheel airbag, lower knee airbag and the seat belt in September. I did know it was involved in a accident prior to purchase since carfax states airbags did not deploy. A reporter approached me in September to inform me that my vehicle was involved in a story of said dealership selling cars with faulty airbags. The Volvo service advisor and myself did reach out the dealership seeking out financial assistance which they state since the vehicle passed a multi point inspection they are not liable to assist financially. The DA is aware of the situation and I am seeking damages that could have resulted in my bodily injury of lost of life.
WHEELS (1 complaints)
WHEELS
1 complaintI have had all 3wheels bend 1 wheel blow apart with in 7 months of owning the car . With in 15000 miles .
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING (1 complaints)
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2022 Volvo S60. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that “Critical Safety Fault Battery - Stop and Service immediately” message was displayed. The contact was able to make it to work and had the vehicle towed to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V793000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was 42,000.
SERVICE BRAKES (1 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaint1) during braking, there have been 3 occasions where the pedal became extremely difficult to press and the vehicle did not slow down properly. This nearly caused a crash. There were no alarms or alerts. Car was delivered to dealer for repairs. They confirmed that there were not diagnostic codes and verified that all the correct software was installed. They were unable to find and correct the problem.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Volvo S60.
