RAV4 engine complaints by model year

The 2019 and 2020 model years hold nearly all the engine complaints, at 145 and 134, which is far above any other year. The 2018 and 2021 years each have only 13 or 14. The 2022 through 2025 years show very few, but they have had much less time on the road to collect complaints, so those low counts do not prove those years are trouble free. The 2018 year stands apart for its fire reports rather than its volume.

What goes wrong

The usual story is a dash message reading "Engine Maintenance Required, Visit Your Dealer" that will not clear. Dealers trace it to the coolant bypass valve. It often appears only with the A/C or heater on, and in some cars it covers the speedometer. Owners say the failure comes after the basic warranty ends, so they pay for it.

Most cases are a nuisance and an expense, not a crash. Still, some technicians told owners that leaving the valve unfixed risks overheating, and a few owners report overheating, bucking, or shuddering at highway speed. The rarer reports are worse: stalls while driving, a block that cracked, and a new engine needed at about 100,000 miles. Fires appear in the federal records too, mostly on 2018 cars, with one 2020 car burning while parked. Most affected cars stay drivable, but a few have been left stranded.

Symptoms owners report

Engine Maintenance Required message

A warning reading "Engine Maintenance Required, Visit Your Dealer" comes on and stays on. It often shows up when the A/C or heater runs. Scanners sometimes pull no codes, but dealers name the coolant bypass valve. Some owners say it blocks the speedometer.

Overheating and coolant loss

A few owners report overheating, bucking, or shuddering at highway speed. One 2021 car overheated from a radiator with pinholes. Others describe white smoke from coolant intrusion, and a cracked engine block that needed a new short block.

Stalling and power loss

Cars shut off while driving, sometimes after flickering gauges or lost power steering. On 2022 and 2024 cars, stalls follow heavy rain, with an "Engine stopped, Steering power low" warning and no restart for several minutes. Dealers often find no codes.

Fire

Fire reports are rare but serious. Two 2018 cars lost power and burned while driving, and another burned in a garage after parking. A 2020 car caught fire after sitting unoccupied for about nine hours. A fire department blamed the electrical system or fuel pump.

Unintended acceleration

A 2018 car sped up at a stop with the brake pressed and hit another vehicle. A 2022 car accelerated into a storefront while pulling into a space, injuring the driver. The airbag did not deploy in either crash.

Oil leaks and odd noises

Smaller reports include timing cover seepage at 59,150 miles on a 2021, a loud foghorn-like noise after startup, oil leaks on a 2024, and engine heat with a foul odor entering the cabin of a 2018.

When the problems start

Bypass valve failures cluster after the basic warranty ends. Reports run from roughly 27,300 to 66,000 miles, with a few as early as 23,000 and one at 89,000. Other problems vary. A 2020 car needed a new engine at about 100,000 miles, and one 2024 owner reported a cracked block at 3600 miles.

Repairs and recalls

Owners most often pay a dealer to replace the coolant bypass valve. Quotes run from about $600 to $1,000 once warranty is over, with one bill at $926.67. One owner says the part is about $100 but the labor is steep, with an $800 engine-out procedure. One owner paid $99.30 under warranty. Some had the valve replaced twice or waited on backordered parts. Federal recall 20V064000 covers 2019 and 2020 RAV4 models with 2.5L four-cylinder engines. It addresses porosity in engine castings that may crack. Dealers inspect and replace the engine, including the block as necessary, free.

Checking a used RAV4 for engine problems

  • Scan the dash for an Engine Maintenance Required or check engine message, and run the A/C and heater, since the warning often appears only then.
  • Ask for service records showing any coolant bypass valve replacement, and check when it was done against the current mileage.
  • Look up the VIN with Toyota or NHTSA to see whether recall 20V064000 applies and whether the work was completed.
  • On a 2019 or 2020, check under the hood and on the driveway for coolant leaks, and watch the temperature gauge on a long test drive.
  • Ask the seller whether the car has ever stalled, lost power steering, or shown an "Engine stopped" warning, especially after rain.
  • Get a pre-purchase inspection that includes a code scan and a coolant system check.

Toyota RAV4 Engine Problems: common questions

Which Toyota RAV4 years have the most engine problems?
The 2019 and 2020 model years, with 145 and 134 engine complaints. Nearly all describe the coolant bypass valve and its dash warning. The 2018 and 2021 years have far fewer, and newer years have had little time to collect complaints.
Is it safe to drive a RAV4 with the Engine Maintenance Required message?
The data does not give a clear answer. Technicians told some owners the fault could lead to overheating if left unrepaired, and a few owners did report overheating. Have a dealer or mechanic diagnose the message promptly and watch the temperature gauge.
Does a recall cover the RAV4 coolant bypass valve?
Federal recall 20V064000 covers 2019 and 2020 RAV4 models with 2.5L four-cylinder engines. It concerns porosity in engine castings that may crack, not the valve. Check your VIN to see whether your car is included.
How much does the RAV4 engine fix cost?
Owners who paid after warranty report about $600 to $1,000 for the coolant bypass valve, including one bill of $926.67. One owner paid $99.30 under warranty. A cracked block or engine replacement would cost far more.
Do RAV4 engines catch fire?
Fire reports exist but are rare. Most are on 2018 cars, where the engine shut down or lost power and then burned, and one is a 2020 that burned while parked. Most engine complaints involve no fire.
