ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

4 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Porsche Macan frequently report issues with the electrical system, primarily involving the back-up camera and headlight assemblies. The back-up camera is described as failing intermittently from the time of vehicle delivery, with some owners noting a temporary fix by tapping the rear bumper. Headlight failures, particularly on the passenger side, are also commonly cited, requiring a costly full assembly replacement. These issues are reported even in vehicles that are no longer under warranty, and owners express concern about the high expense and potential safety risks due to inadequate lighting. The absence of warning sensors for headlight failures is noted, and these problems are reported to occur without prior indication, suggesting a significant consideration for prospective buyers.

4 complaints total

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

3 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Porsche Macan frequently report issues with the passenger side headlight assembly, particularly the low beam. Complaints describe the headlight as inoperable, requiring a full assembly replacement, often at a cost exceeding $4,000. These failures typically occur around 55,000 to 56,000 miles, just outside of factory warranty coverage. Multiple owners highlight the lack of a warning sensor for the headlight failure, which could impact vehicle safety, especially since the vehicle may not pass safety inspections without a functioning headlight. This information is crucial for potential buyers considering the long-term maintenance costs of this model.

BACK OVER PREVENTION

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the 2020 Porsche Macan's rearview camera system, with common symptoms including distortion and intermittent functionality. Complaints frequently mention that the rear backup camera becomes unusable due to distortion, and the problem is acknowledged by Porsche in their legal notices. Additionally, multiple owners describe the cameras, including front and side views, working sporadically, which complicates parking and backing out of driveways. These issues reportedly worsen over time, though specific mileage ranges are not detailed. Safety implications are noted as the inability to detect objects in the vehicle's path, potentially increasing the risk of accidents when reversing.

2 complaints total
SERVICE BRAKES (2 complaints)

SERVICE BRAKES

2 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Porsche Macan frequently report issues with the vehicle's brakes and rotors, with problems emerging as early as 14,000 to 21,000 miles. Common symptoms include the vehicle shaking abnormally when the brake pedal is depressed, with no warning lights to indicate a problem. These complaints indicate that the shaking is attributed to wear and tear on the rotors and brake pads, which are not covered under warranty according to the manufacturer. While no crashes or loss of control are reported, the shaking could have safety implications if not addressed. Used car buyers should be aware of potential brake and rotor issues that may arise relatively early in the vehicle's lifespan.

BACK UP CAMERA FAILS INTERMITTENTLY SINCE CAR WAS NEW A YEAR AGO. PORSCHE USA AND DEALER PORSCHE OF SAN DIEGO HAVE REFUSED TO EVEN LOOK INTO PROBLEMS AS I HAVE NOT SUCCEEDED IN BRINGING IT TO DEALER WHEN CAMERA DOESN'T WORK! I HAVE FIXED IT MYSELF TWICE BY HITTING CAMERA ABOVE BUMPER WITH MY HAND. THIS IS DANGEROUS, AND CAR CANNOT SAFELY BE DRIVEN WITHOUT A BACKUP CAMERA. I NOTE FORD IS RECALLING 700000 VEHICLES FOR SIMILAR PROBLEM! WHAT DO I DO? OCCURS WHEN PARKED.

2021-10-12Crash reported1 injury

I was involved in an accident October 12, 2021 in which the passenger side of my car was hit. The damage was from the front passenger door to the rear bumper. The total damage to date 02/18/2022 is approximately $25K. In the incident - not one single air bag deployed. I suffered a concussion as I hit my head upon impact. I reported the incident directly to Porsche within 2 weeks of the accident. I was transparent with all information and provided all requested documents to Porsche. However, I was advised in December that their engineers weren't able to inspect the airbags and the car worked as it was supposed to in the accident. Strangely enough - I am still waiting as of today 02/18/2022 for my car repairs to be completed by the body shop. So there was ample time for Porsche to inspect the airbag system - 4 months to be exact. Porsche touts it's safety as a top selling feature and I am yet to receive a resolution to the incident of the airbags not deploying during the accident.

The contact stated while driving approximately 30-35 MPH, the front passenger's side and the rear passenger's side tires experienced blowouts, causing the vehicle to spin out. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed and a diagnostic report was sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer sent a letter to the contact, stating that the tires experienced impact damage on the sidewall, which caused the tire blowouts overtime; therefore, they could not assist. The contact stated that the tires were brand new replacement equipment. The tires were not replaced. Additionally, the contact stated that the failure was a recurring failure and she had previously replaced tires 8 to 10 times. The tire failure mileage was unknown. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 18,000. VIN was not available

A terrible drain design that has plugged drains emptying rain water into the car. The water from rear drain will fill into then Battery & Sub woofer compartment under under the spare. The drains are not easy to access for cleaning either. you have to be pulling off wheel liners and yanking/cleaning the plugs just so my car doesn’t flood itself. Porsche should modify the plugs so water does not flood into the car. This water damaged caused over $6,500 worth of damage. The main factor is the Airbag Sensors were faulted by the water damage. Might have effects the Airbag function if I was in an accident. That is what scares me

As I was stepping on the accelerator, I heard two pops and somehow the car lost its torque/pull. Check engine light came on. Went to the dealership and they said the high pressure fuel pump is broken and it cracked. There seems to be a recall for 2015 to 2018 models, but not 2020 models. My car only has 13000 miles too. Safety wise, I felt endangered since the car couldn't accelerate properly.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
