POWER TRAIN
4 complaintsOwners report that the 2021 Lincoln Navigator frequently experiences powertrain issues, particularly with the transmission. Complaints frequently mention symptoms such as the vehicle slipping out of gear, losing power, and entering neutral unexpectedly, especially during acceleration at speeds over 50 mph. Multiple owners describe instances where the vehicle loses propulsion without warning, leading to potential safety hazards such as near-stalls in traffic or while changing lanes. The issues often surface shortly after purchase, sometimes within the first week, and persist despite repairs like transmission overhauls or valve system replacements. These problems pose significant safety risks, including the potential for accidents due to sudden deceleration or loss of control.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
4 complaintsOwners of the 2021 Lincoln Navigator report issues primarily related to the panoramic sunroof and safety recalls. Multiple owners describe incidents where the panoramic sunroof explodes without any apparent external impact, often while driving, resulting in loud noises and falling glass into the cabin. This defect is noted to potentially pose safety risks, especially if passengers are present without the sunroof screen closed. Additionally, one owner reports dissatisfaction with the handling of a safety recall related to fire risks, indicating a delay in resolution from the manufacturer. These issues are reported across various mileage ranges, with no specific pattern emerging regarding when they occur.
ENGINE
4 complaintsOwners of the 2021 Lincoln Navigator report issues related to engine failure and delayed recall repairs. One owner describes a sudden engine failure while driving at highway speeds, resulting in a hazardous situation without prior warning signs. Other complaints frequently mention receiving recall notifications for engine-related issues, but parts for repairs are unavailable, leading to extended wait times. Although some owners have not experienced engine failures, the lack of available parts for the recall repair is a common concern. Safety implications include the risk of engine failure at high speeds, which poses a significant safety risk during driving.

These problems often emerge around 19,000 miles, with one owner noting a required steering column replacement costing $1,700. Additionally, complaints mention distorted instrument panel displays and persistent brake light illumination during steering issues. Safety implications are noted, as the difficulty in steering could potentially lead to loss of vehicle control. These concerns are reported alongside drivetrain and suspension issues, highlighting a pattern of mechanical failures in various systems within the vehicle.
VISIBILITY/WIPER (3 complaints)
VISIBILITY/WIPER
3 complaintsOwners report issues with the windshield wiper arms on the 2021 Lincoln Navigator, particularly with the passenger side. Common symptoms include the passenger wiper arm detaching during use in rainy conditions and difficulty in realigning the wiper arm after lifting it to clear snow. Additionally, one owner notes that the driver’s side wiper arm failure is linked to a recall, though parts for the repair are unavailable. These issues occur without specific mileage data provided, but the potential for impaired visibility during inclement weather is a safety concern. Buyers should be aware of these wiper arm problems and check for completed recall repairs.

These complaints highlight potential safety implications, especially in scenarios where visibility is compromised during reversing maneuvers. Buyers should be aware of these issues, particularly in warmer climates or when the vehicle has been parked in the sun.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING (1 complaints)
EXTERIOR LIGHTING
1 complaintTHE REAR LIGHT BAR DEVELOPS LEAKS AND CAN MAKE THE REAR LIGHING GO OUT. DEALER WAS MADE AWARE AND STATES IT'S NO LONGER A COVERED ITEM.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (1 complaints)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
1 complaintI am reporting a serious safety concern involving a 2021 Lincoln Navigator with factory equipment only. After snowfall, during factory remote start, the vehicle produced a hot/burning smell, and I observed visible melting and bubbling of multiple driver-side and passenger side exterior pillars. The vehicle has a factory sunroof and no aftermarket electronics or modifications. The melting appears on the exterior, indicating heat originating from inside the pillar cavities. Due to concern for electrical overheating and fire risk, I discontinued using my remote start. A Lincoln dealership dismissed the concern and incorrectly stated that there is no electrical wiring in the pillars. Lincoln Customer Care has verbally refused assistance solely due to lack of extended warranty and has declined escalation, despite the reported fire risk. I am concerned this involves water intrusion from the sunroof drainage system contacting powered body or airbag wiring, creating a risk of electrical fire. I am requesting NHTSA review this as a potential safety defect involving electrical overheating and fire risk.
FUEL SYSTEM (1 complaints)
FUEL SYSTEM
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2021 Lincoln Navigator. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, several attempts were needed to start the vehicle. The contact also stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle was shaking abnormally. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V455000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM (1 complaints)
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
1 complaintI am the owner of a 2021 Lincoln Navigator black label, currently subject to Safety Recall 25S75 concerning the low-pressure fuel pump that can cause engine stalling and increased crash risk. Ford’s recall filing and public reports make clear the hazard and that a remedy is still being developed. My vehicle has repeatedly exhibited hesitation and loss of acceleration consistent with the recall since I purchased the car in 2021. While driving on the highway with my 10 year old daughter and her friend home from soccer on 495 last Monday 9/29, I tried to pass a car by switching to the left lane and stepped on the accelerator. The car hesitated, and felt like it was going to cease altogether for a moment, however the accelerator did finally « catch » and I was able to pass the car. I have had this same sensation while pressing my foot on the accelerator though at low speeds on backroads. After the incident last Monday I had the car towed to the Lincoln dealer so they could assess the car. I have been told that the oil was very low. The oil light or check engine light was never on, and it has gone on previously when I’ve been due for an oil change. I’ve been told that the tires also need to be rotated. The dealer who serviced the car said that the car is driving great now and is safe to drive and can be delivered to me or I can pick up. I called Lincoln corporate Friday 10/3/25 and a case was opened and called back on Monday and spoke with a representative who said that there was nothing she could do if the dealer is saying that the car is safe to drive. I don’t feel safe driving the car with this open safety defect unrepaired. A loaner to use while the process for repurchase of the car would be appreciated, but is being denied while they continue the process of good faith eval /consideration of repurchase of the car.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Lincoln Navigator.
