2024 Lexus NX Common Problems by Component
129 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
11 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report several issues with the electrical system in the 2024 Lexus NX, with a notable pattern of 12V battery failures that leave the vehicle non-responsive, often after short-distance driving. Complaints frequently mention being stranded due to unexpected battery drainage and describe instances where the vehicle's doors lock and become inoperable, sometimes trapping occupants inside. These issues typically arise around 5,000 to 19,000 miles. Safety implications include two crashes with injuries and one fire originating from the driver's side door, raising concerns about potential risks when electrical failures occur. Buyers should be aware of these patterns, particularly if considering a plug-in hybrid model, as multiple complaints suggest unresolved issues with battery and app communication systems.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
7 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 Lexus NX report several distinct issues under the "UNKNOWN OR OTHER" category. A common problem involves the vehicle's doors, with multiple owners experiencing unexpected door unlocking while driving, accompanied by wind noise and warning alerts. Another issue frequently mentioned is the malfunctioning of the CarPlay system, which disrupts hands-free phone calls and voice commands, reportedly due to a pending software update. Additionally, one owner describes a crash incident where the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated while parking. Complaints also include a vibration in the steering wheel at specific speeds, which some attribute to the hybrid powertrain, and issues with key fob availability due to a chip shortage. These reports are noted soon after purchase, with some issues persisting despite dealer intervention. Safety implications are highlighted by the crash report and the potential for sudden vehicle stoppage or acceleration.
STRUCTURE
3 complaintsOwners report two primary issues with the structure of the 2024 Lexus NX. Multiple owners describe incidents where the sunroof unexpectedly explodes while driving, both on local roads and highways, with no apparent external cause. Additionally, complaints frequently mention that in snowy conditions, the vehicle's standard headlights accumulate snow, leading to a significant reduction in visibility and causing the safety features to shut down. This requires drivers to frequently stop and manually clear snow from the headlights to maintain visibility. These issues are reported without specific mileage ranges, but they present potential safety concerns due to impaired visibility and unexpected sunroof failure.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM (2 complaints)
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2024 Lexus NX report issues related to the fuel/propulsion system, specifically involving sudden acceleration and fuel door latch failures. One complaint describes a crash following an automatic braking system failure after experiencing sudden acceleration, with no prior warning signs noted. Another complaint details the fuel door latch failing to open, preventing refueling and risking the vehicle running out of fuel. This issue required manual intervention to access the fuel cap and is awaiting a replacement part. These problems are reported in new vehicles, indicating they may occur at low mileage.
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 Lexus NX report issues related to the power train, specifically involving sudden electrical failures and gear shifting problems. One owner of the NX 450h+ describes a complete electrical power loss while driving, leading to a loss of power steering and brake assist, which presents a potential crash risk; this issue occurred twice at around 14,600 miles. Another owner of the NX350 notes a problem with the vehicle failing to shift into the intended gear, despite the instrument panel indicating otherwise, accompanied by an abnormal popping sound. Both complaints highlight safety implications, including potential loss of control, with the NX 450h+ issue being repeatable and confirmed by a dealer technician. These issues may be of interest to potential buyers considering the safety and reliability of the vehicle.
VISIBILITY/WIPER (2 complaints)
VISIBILITY/WIPER
2 complaintsOwners report two main visibility issues with the 2024 Lexus NX. The first issue involves the windshield wipers, which do not clean up to the edge, leaving approximately a three-inch gap, potentially affecting visibility in certain weather conditions. The second issue involves the driver-side mirror, which vibrates consistently at highway speeds of around 65 mph. These complaints do not specify mileage ranges, and no safety incidents such as crashes or loss of control are mentioned. Buyers should consider these visibility concerns when evaluating the vehicle.
VISIBILITY (1 complaints)
VISIBILITY
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2024 Lexus NX 350H. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the passenger’s side side view mirror shattered without impact. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where the contact was informed that the repair would be paid for out-of-pocket. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 5,500.
SERVICE BRAKES (1 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaintThe incident happened on August 27, 2025, at about 8:30 in the morning when I was trying to park the car in a parking lot. As I came to the parking space to park the car with my foot on the brake pedal, the car accelerated all of a sudden after it had stopped before I could shift the gear lever to “Park”. The car went over the curb. I reversed and tried to park the car again in the same spot. The car accelerated again and went over the curb, and this time ended up going all the way to the two-way traffic road located ahead of the curb. Fortunately, there was no traffic on the road at that time and no pedestrian on the sidewalk, and no one got hurt. The car stopped in the middle of the road. I drove back to the parking lot and tried to park the car again in the same spot. This time the car stopped without any incident. The dashboard said, “System Malfunction” and said to take the car to the dealership. I drove to the Lexus dealership without any incident. There was significant damage in the front and both sides of the car. I told Lexus what had happened. A case manager was assigned. An inspector was sent to inspect the car. After the inspection, he sent me a report. The report was technical in nature and had graphs and data points without any explanation. I could not understand the report. He told me that the report was sent to Toyota and Toyota would get back to me after they had analyzed the data downloaded by him. Toyota sent me the report, and the report said that my foot was on the accelerator at that time and the car functioned properly. I am pretty sure that my foot was on the brake pedal at that time and not on the accelerator. Toyota was not willing to answer any questions I had and told me to get a second opinion. Currently, my car is in the auto body shop being repaired via my insurance. Even though, no further incident has happened to date, I am afraid that this could happen again in the future, possibly badly hurting or even killing people.
ENGINE (1 complaints)
ENGINE
1 complaintSafety-relatedThe contact owned a 2024 Lexus NX530. The contact stated that while parked and turned off, a few hours later, she observed a fire emanating from the front of the vehicle. The fire then spread to another vehicle that was parked in front of the vehicle. The fire department arrived and defused the fire. The contact stated that the fire department advised her that the fire originated from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to a salvage lot. A fire report was taken, and a police report was pending being filed. The contact mentioned that while driving the vehicle prior to the fire, there were no warning lights illuminated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING (1 complaints)
EXTERIOR LIGHTING
1 complaintThere is a defect on all models like mine, and the dealer claims that it cannot be fixed. With my former vehicle, a 2019 BMW 340i GT, whenever I drove into a garage, the headlights would come on immediately so I could easily see where I should go. With the Lexus, it takes about 5-to-8 seconds for the headlights to turn on. This is unsafe to anyone walking in the garage inn that area.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
