2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Common Problems by Component
125 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
47 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport frequently report issues with the DC-DC converter, which results in complete electrical failure and renders the vehicle inoperable. Common symptoms include warning messages about electrical faults, sudden loss of power, and inability to restart the vehicle, often leaving drivers stranded. These failures typically occur between 40,000 to 59,000 miles, with some reports indicating part backorders causing extended vehicle downtime. Safety implications are significant, with reports of vehicles stalling in traffic, leading to near-crash situations and one confirmed injury. Additionally, owners describe problems with infotainment screens going blank while driving, compromising access to navigation and other controls, further impacting safety.
STEERING
14 complaintsOwners report issues with the steering of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, primarily involving power steering failure and steering wheel lock-up. Complaints frequently mention that the steering column becomes inoperable, sometimes accompanied by warning messages such as "Lane assist not available" and "power steering resistance reduced." These issues often occur shortly after purchase, with some reports indicating problems at mileage as low as 956 miles. Safety implications are significant, as several owners describe losing steering control while driving, potentially leading to hazardous situations. Multiple owners also note that the problem persists despite attempts at repair, with some vehicles requiring towing due to being undriveable.
VISIBILITY/WIPER
13 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport frequently report issues with the windshield cracking easily, often without any apparent impact or reason. Complaints commonly describe spontaneous cracks that develop while the vehicle is parked or driving, with some owners experiencing these issues within just a few days of replacing the windshield. Several reports indicate that even minor chips quickly expand into large cracks, reducing visibility and posing safety risks. The pattern suggests that these problems can occur at low mileage, with one owner noting an incident at 10,000 miles. These issues may lead to repeated windshield replacements, which can be a significant maintenance expense.
POWER TRAIN (9 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
9 complaintsOwners report that the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport experiences uncommanded shifts from Drive to Neutral, particularly during the automatic engine restart phase of the start-stop system. This issue is often followed by a temporary inability to accelerate and warning messages such as "Gearbox fault detected" and "Charging system fault detected." Multiple complaints describe incidents where the vehicle rolls backward or becomes immobilized in traffic, posing potential safety risks. Additionally, several reports indicate failures related to the DC to DC converter within the mild hybrid system, leading to electrical faults and vehicle shutdowns. These issues are noted to occur intermittently and have been difficult to reproduce consistently by dealers.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER
8 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport report issues primarily related to the vehicle's windshield integrity and gear shifting functionality. Complaints frequently mention windshields cracking easily, with some describing cracks appearing without any clear impact. Gear shifting problems are also highlighted, including delays in shifting between drive and reverse, which in one instance led to a crash. Additional issues include the vehicle unexpectedly shifting into neutral, especially during remote start operations, and electrical problems affecting oxygen sensors and backup camera visibility. These problems are noted at low mileages, often under 6,500 miles, and present safety implications such as loss of control and potential vehicle immobilization.

Complaints frequently mention brake warning lights activating, brake pads wearing out as early as 9,500 to 17,000 miles, and some instances of flaking or cracking pads. Symptoms include squealing noises, erratic vehicle shaking when braking, and in one case, complete brake failure under 12,000 miles. Safety implications include the potential for compromised braking performance, though no crashes or loss of control are specifically reported. Buyers should be aware of the potential need for early brake pad replacement and the possibility of parts availability issues.
ENGINE (6 complaints)
ENGINE
6 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport frequently report issues related to coolant leaks, which can lead to engine overheating. Symptoms include the engine temperature gauge moving to red, warning messages about low coolant levels, and the need for frequent antifreeze refills. Some reports indicate that the vehicle stalls or shifts into neutral unexpectedly, particularly at low speeds or when stopped, which has been noted within the first 10,000 miles of use. Safety implications are highlighted by the risk of engine fires due to coolant leaks and the potential for loss of vehicle control when the engine dies or shifts into neutral unexpectedly. These issues often result in costly repairs, with some owners citing repair costs exceeding $2,500.
AIR BAGS (5 complaints)
AIR BAGS
5 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport frequently report issues related to air bag recalls, with multiple complaints indicating delays in the availability of parts needed for recall repairs. Typical symptoms mentioned include the air bag warning light remaining illuminated, with one owner noting this issue at approximately 10,000 miles. While no crashes or injuries are reported, the delay in recall repairs and the illuminated warning light suggest potential safety implications, particularly regarding the reliability of the passenger air bag. Prospective buyers should be aware of these ongoing recall-related delays and the presence of warning lights in some vehicles.
SUSPENSION (3 complaints)
SUSPENSION
3 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport frequently report issues related to the suspension system. Common symptoms include the vehicle displaying warning messages about the suspension being disabled, as well as instances where the suspension system appears to detach, leading to wheel detachment. These issues are often accompanied by other system failures, such as battery and camera malfunctions. One owner experienced these problems at approximately 47,000 miles. Safety implications are significant, with reports of sudden loss of control and the vehicle stopping unexpectedly, posing potential hazards in traffic. How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
