2020 Ford Ecosport Recall Details
3 recalls have been issued for the 2020 Ford Ecosport. All recall repairs are performed free of charge at authorized dealerships.
BACK OVER PREVENTION
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Transit Connect, 2019-2020 MKZ, MKX, Edge, Continental, F-150, Nautilus, Fusion, 2019-2023 Ranger, Mustang, 2020-2021 EcoSport, Expedition, Navigator, 2020-2022 Escape, F-250 SD, Corsair, 2020-2023 Aviator, Transit, 2020-2024 Explorer, 2021-2024 Bronco Sport, and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image, or the image may remain on the display after the backing event has ended.
Consequence
A rearview camera that displays a blank image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle. A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver. Both of these situations can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S72.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure.
Consequence
A loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt, free of charge. If engine failure occurs due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor). Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S64.
AIR BAGS
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020 EcoSport and 2019-2020 Transit Connect vehicles. Depending on the model, either the driver side or passenger side frontal air bag modules are missing the first-stage booster propellant and sleeve. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Consequence
Air bag modules missing the first-stage booster propellant will not deploy as intended in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected air bag module on either the driver or passenger side, free of charge. This recall began February 18, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20C26.

Reports often involve vehicles with mileage around 25,000 to 35,000 miles, with some owners experiencing persistent electrical failures due to water intrusion. Safety implications are noted, such as unintended acceleration and engine stalling, which may pose risks during driving.
SERVICE BRAKES (7 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
7 complaintsOwners report several issues with the service brakes of the 2020 Ford EcoSport. Common symptoms include abnormal sounds such as squeaking or groaning when the brake pedal is depressed, particularly when reversing, and in some cases, brake failure. Complaints frequently mention the need for brake system repairs at relatively low mileages, with some owners experiencing problems as early as 8,600 miles. Safety implications are noted, with multiple reports of brake failure leading to reliance on the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. These issues are often accompanied by other mechanical problems, such as engine troubles, which could suggest a broader pattern of mechanical reliability concerns.
AIR BAGS (6 complaints)
AIR BAGS
6 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2020 Ford EcoSport frequently report issues with airbag deployment during crashes, with four out of six complaints involving accidents. Common symptoms include airbags failing to deploy upon impact, even in significant collisions, and in one case, airbags deploying without any apparent cause while driving. These incidents occur across a range of mileages, from approximately 20,310 to 90,000 miles. Two injuries are reported, including a concussion and soreness following crashes where airbags did not deploy as expected. Prospective buyers should be aware of these potential airbag deployment issues, especially in used models with similar mileage.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (5 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
5 complaintsOwners of the 2020 Ford EcoSport frequently report issues with vehicle speed control, particularly involving unexpected loss of power and acceleration problems. Common symptoms include the vehicle failing to accelerate as needed, sudden power loss, and warning lights such as the check engine light or wrench icon illuminating. These issues often occur during routine driving situations such as starting from a stop or overtaking, with some reports indicating occurrences at mileage as high as approximately 73,950 miles. Safety implications are noted, with one owner describing a near collision due to the vehicle's slow acceleration and another experiencing unintended acceleration while braking. These patterns suggest potential reliability concerns that prospective buyers should consider, especially given the recurring nature of the complaints.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
