ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

9 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado-EV frequently report issues with the rear door sensors not functioning properly, leading to situations where the vehicle does not indicate when rear doors are open or ajar. This issue often results in the vehicle locking itself with occupants or items inside, as the automatic locking system does not recognize open rear doors. Additionally, there are mentions of interior lights failing to illuminate when rear doors are opened, which is particularly problematic when securing children or pets. Some owners also describe problems with the vehicle entering "limp mode" unexpectedly after driving through modest puddles, especially after heavy rain, posing potential safety risks due to sudden deceleration. These issues are noted across various mileage ranges and appear to be more prevalent in the WT trim models.

9 complaints total

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

3 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV report issues with the OEM soft tonneau cover, DC fast charging, and the frunk compartment. Complaints frequently mention the tonneau cover material shrinking, causing it to detach at highway speeds, posing a potential road hazard. Multiple owners describe the DC fast charging system as not charging at expected voltage levels, with no warning lights indicating a malfunction, even though the issue has been reproduced by service centers. Additionally, several reports indicate that the frunk compartment fails to close properly, triggering "limp" mode and rendering the vehicle undriveable. These issues appear across different components but share common safety implications due to potential detachment, charging inefficiencies, and operational failures.

3 complaints total

STRUCTURE

3 complaints

Owners report issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado-EV's tonneau cover and front trunk latch. Complaints frequently mention the tonneau cover detaching, with metal crossbars separating and posing potential safety risks due to the possibility of them becoming airborne. Additionally, there are reports of the front trunk latch mechanism failing, causing the vehicle to enter limp mode, which requires resetting the 12v battery to resolve temporarily. These issues are noted soon after purchase, within days of ownership, suggesting they occur at low mileage. Safety implications include the risk of the tonneau cover or its components striking other vehicles and the operational limitations imposed by the trunk latch failure.

3 complaints total
VISIBILITY/WIPER (3 complaints)

VISIBILITY/WIPER

3 complaints

Owners of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado-EV frequently report issues with the passenger side mirror being manufactured with flat glass instead of convex glass. This design choice results in a limited field of view, creating significant blind spots, particularly for a large vehicle like this truck. Owners describe difficulty in seeing smaller vehicles on the right side and approaching traffic from the right rear, which poses a risk during quick maneuvers. The lack of a convex replacement option from the manufacturer is noted, and the complaints highlight the potential for accidents due to these visibility limitations. No specific mileage ranges or timelines are mentioned, indicating the issue may be inherent to the vehicle's design rather than wear over time.

3 complaints total
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)

POWER TRAIN

2 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report issues with the power train of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado-EV, specifically involving unintended acceleration. One complaint details a severe incident where the vehicle hesitated when idle but continued to accelerate even after the accelerator was released, leading to a crash with injuries. This incident involved the vehicle flipping multiple times and resulted in the vehicle being totaled. The mileage at the time of failure is not specified, and the manufacturer has not been informed. The safety implications are significant, as loss of control and a serious crash are reported.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle in sub-zero temperatures, the HVAC unit failed to blow hot air through the vents. During the failur,e the contact was unable to defrost the windows. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who determined that the heater control module was inoperable and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the heater control module part was on a national back order and currently not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 13,000.

STEERING

Under heavy acceleration the vehicle swerves from lane to lane and the operator is unable to counter the steering. The behavior continues until the acceleration is halted. The vehicle was grounded due to it being deemed unsafe by the originating dealership technician and repairs were attempted but were unsuccessful. The dealership had another vehicle like mine in inventory so they tested that one and found the same erratic behavior but rather than deeming it to be a problem they declared the steering issue it to be normal for that model. This is section 4 of the attached dealership service report.

I am 6'2" tall. The shoulder straps on both the drivers and passenger side do not adjust up far enough to protect me in the event of a crash. The straps slip down below my shoulder. This is due to the fact that the WT model does not have power seats, so I am unable to lower my seating position to a safe level. If the seat could be lowered, the shoulder straps would sit properly above my shoulder. In the event of a crash the shoulder strap will be totally useless.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases via vehicles.dev. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.

Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Chevrolet Silverado-EV.
