FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain front-wheel drive 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan, 2015-2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2018 Golf Sportwagen GP, 2018-2019 Golf Sportwagen A7, 2015-2017 Golf Sportwagen, 2015-2020 Golf GTI, and 2015-2020 Golf A7 vehicles. Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister.

Consequence

A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the suction pump, free of charge. Final owner notification letters for Audi owners were mailed on July 25, 2024. Final owner letters for VW owners were mailed on August 13, 2024. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are VW: 20UF/Audi: 20YF. Vehicles that were previously recalled under 16V-647 will need to have the new remedy completed. This recall expands and replaces previous recall number 16V-647.

22V8150002022-10-31

TIRES

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan LWB, Golf Sportswagen A7, Golf Alltrack, Golf R GP, Audi Q3, Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Jetta NF, Jetta GLI, Golf GTI, Atlas, Golf A7, Audi A3, 2020-2021 Atlas Cross Sport, and 2021 Atlas FL vehicles. The tire pressure monitoring system may not detect an air pressure loss in adequate time when deflating occurs among all four tires simultaneously. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."

Consequence

An undetected sudden loss of pressure in all four tires increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will update the TPMS software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 18, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi’s customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are (Audi) 45J7, and (VW) 45J6 and 45J8.

23V6040002023-08-30

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019 Golf, Golf Alltrack, Golf Sportwagen, 2019-2020 Golf GTI, and Jetta vehicles equipped with a conventional ignition switch. The ignition switch may fail, especially in high temperature environments.

Consequence

Ignition switch failure can cause the electrical system to shut down and the engine to stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 1, 2024. Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 28H7.

FUEL SYSTEM

2 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Volkswagen Golf report issues related to the fuel system, specifically involving the evaporative emissions system. Complaints frequently mention the check engine warning light remaining illuminated and diagnostic trouble code P0456 indicating a small leak in the system. These issues are reported at approximately 17,000 miles. Additionally, some owners reference a recall for the fuel system, noting delays in parts availability for the necessary repairs. No incidents of crashes, fires, or loss of control are reported.

2 complaints total

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

2 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Volkswagen Golf report two distinct issues. One complaint describes an incident where the sunroof unexpectedly exploded while driving, with no prior impact, posing a potential safety risk from glass entering the cabin. The repair process for the sunroof was lengthy, taking 8-9 months, with challenges in obtaining service from the local dealership. Another complaint highlights the vehicle intermittently stalling at low speeds and when idling, which could affect drivability. These reports do not specify mileage, but potential buyers should be aware of these issues when considering this model.

2 complaints total

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

2 complaints

Owners report issues with the 2020 Volkswagen Golf's electrical system, specifically related to the emergency call function and unexpected vehicle shutdowns. One complaint describes a persistent dashboard warning indicating the "SOS Emergency Call Function Not Available," confirmed by a dealer but unresolved due to a part backorder. Another owner details a sudden vehicle shutdown while driving at approximately 25 mph, accompanied by multiple warning lights such as EPC and a lack of brake and accelerator response, though the dealer could not replicate or diagnose the issue. These incidents, occurring shortly after purchase or at unspecified mileage, pose potential safety risks, including loss of vehicle control. Buyers should be aware of these reported issues, which may affect the vehicle's reliability and safety.

2 complaints total
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)

POWER TRAIN

2 complaints

Owners of the 2020 Volkswagen Golf with a manual transmission report sudden stalling issues. Complaints frequently mention the engine stalling when the clutch pedal is fully depressed while coming to a stop, often without warning signs or error messages. These incidents occur at low mileage, with one owner noting the problem within just 150 miles of purchase. No safety implications such as crashes or loss of control are reported, but the issue does not trigger a check engine light, making it difficult for owners to diagnose and reproduce the problem. This information may be useful for potential buyers to consider, especially those interested in manual transmission models.

2 complaints total
ENGINE (2 complaints)

ENGINE

2 complaints

Owners report that the 2020 Volkswagen Golf experiences engine stalling issues when the clutch is fully depressed and the vehicle is coasting or coming to a stop. Complaints frequently mention that the engine shuts off without any warning lights or error codes, resulting in a loss of power steering and throttle. This issue appears to occur after the vehicle has been driven for a short period and the engine is warmed up, with no specific mileage range noted. Safety implications include the potential for loss of vehicle control due to power steering failure. Buyers should be aware that restarting the engine can be problematic, often requiring multiple attempts, and that idle fluctuations may occur once the engine is restarted.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (1 complaints)

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

1 complaint
2024-10-01

While driving with the cruise control set to 55 mph, the car began an uncommanded acceleration. When I looked down on the dashboard display I noticed that the cruise control target speed was set to 95 mph. I switched of the cruise control and resumed manual control of the speed. When I switch the cruise control back on I observed the target speed rapidly increase from the intended 55 mph to 95 mph accompanied by moderate vehicle acceleration. I again switched off the cruise control and resumed manual control of the speed. Sometime later during the drive a cruise control error message appeared on the dashboard. Subsequently the problem was identified as a faulty cruise control switch (part number 5G0-959-442-AE-ICX). The switch was replaced and the fault has not reoccurred over a few hundred miles of driving. While this malfunction can be overridden using the normal cruise control disconnect procedures, uncommanded acceleration poses a safety risk to driver and other motorists or pedestrians.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY GOING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH. IT WAS A CLEAR DAY (ABOUT 70 DEGREES F), VERY LIGHT TRAFFIC, NO OTHER CARS WERE IN MY IMMEDIATE VICINITY. I WAS NOT DRIVING UNDER ANY OVERPASS NOR DID I SEE OR HEAR ANY ROCKS HIT MY CAR. OUT OF NOWHERE, I HEARD A VERY LOUD POP WHICH SOUNDED LIKE A GUNSHOT. I LOOKED UP AND MY SUNROOF WAS COMPLETELY SHATTERED UPWARDS AND SOME SMALL SHARDS OF GLASS FELL ONTO MY PASSENGER SEAT, MY CONSOLE, AND ME. I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF MY CAR ALTHOUGH IT WAS VERY ALARMING TO HAVE THIS HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND I HAD TO SLOW DOWN TO REALIZE WHAT HAD JUST HAPPENED.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.

Get notified when new recalls or reliability data is added for the Volkswagen Golf.

No spam. Only data updates for this model.
