Another common issue involves paint peeling around the window frame on white vehicles, although some VINs are reportedly not recognized as affected by Toyota. Additionally, a complaint highlights the distraction and potential safety hazard posed by large in-vehicle messages, which can obstruct the speedometer and cause panic when received while driving. Lastly, an air conditioning failure is reported in a new vehicle used for nonprofit purposes, with the owner facing challenges in obtaining service due to logistical issues. These problems, particularly the shattering sunroof and distracting in-vehicle messages, may have safety implications.
ENGINE (4 complaints)
ENGINE
4 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma report several engine-related issues. Commonly mentioned problems include engine misfires and rough idling, particularly when driving at slower speeds or on inclines, often leading to abnormal sounds such as metal clanging. Another issue involves the engine warning light activating due to missing or faulty oil filler caps, with reports suggesting this occurs around 36,000 miles. Additionally, there are mentions of coolant hose leaks, identified by dealers as a known problem, and hesitation or "dead spots" when accelerating from a stop, which have nearly resulted in accidents. These issues, occurring across various mileages, could pose safety risks, particularly when acceleration is compromised.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (4 complaints)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
4 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma report several electrical system issues, with the most common involving malfunctioning speedometers and stalling engines. One owner details a speedometer that becomes inoperable and misreads speed, with the issue recurring even after an odometer replacement at approximately 53,068 miles. Another frequent problem is the vehicle stalling unexpectedly at various speeds, accompanied by all engine lights illuminating before the truck shuts off. Additionally, complaints highlight blurry exterior camera images, which impair visibility and contributed to a minor collision with a shopping cart. A significant safety concern is a reported incident where unintended acceleration and steering lock led to a crash into a neighbor's home, occurring at around 3,500 miles. These reports indicate potential safety risks and operational challenges for prospective buyers to consider.
STEERING (2 complaints)
STEERING
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the power steering system in the 2022 Toyota Tacoma, particularly involving the power steering pump leaking. This issue appears at around 33,000 miles and recurs by 45,500 miles, with one owner noting a replacement cost of $1,100 for a pump only 12,500 miles old. Additionally, some owners describe steering wheel jitter and the vehicle pulling to the right, which is partially mitigated by wheel balancing but persists until a wheel bearing issue is identified at 78,000 miles. These symptoms suggest potential steering instability, which could affect vehicle control, especially at highway speeds. Buyers considering a used Tacoma should be aware of these potential steering-related issues and the associated repair history.
TIRES (2 complaints)
TIRES
2 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma report issues with tire integrity, specifically noting sidewall failures and cracking. Multiple complaints describe sidewall damage leading to rapid pressure loss and blowouts, occurring at highway speeds between 55-60 mph with tire pressures maintained at 35 PSI. One owner reports these issues occurring around 8,000 miles, with both front and rear tires affected. These incidents present safety concerns due to the potential for loss of vehicle control. How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
