A few owners also describe engine damage linked to fuel pump issues, with one case involving a crash due to unintended acceleration. These complaints suggest potential safety implications, including loss of power and control, which may be of concern to prospective buyers.
STEERING (9 complaints)
STEERING
9 complaintsOwners report issues with the steering rack in the 2019 Toyota Tacoma, frequently mentioning fluid leaks that require replacement of the entire steering rack. Complaints often describe fluid visible on the steering boots and diminishing power steering fluid levels, with some owners noting this problem at mileages as low as 29,000 to 78,000 miles. Symptoms include rattling noises from the front end, knocking, and grinding when turning. Safety implications are noted, as loss of power steering could pose a risk, particularly at highway speeds. Used car buyers should be aware of these reported issues, especially since repairs are costly and may recur.

Symptoms commonly include leaks during rainy conditions and a musty or mildew odor, with some owners concerned about potential mold development. These issues are often noted at varying mileage, with one report indicating a failure at 80,000 miles. Additionally, multiple owners describe problems with paint flaking or chipping, particularly on white vehicles, which are not covered by existing recalls. While one complaint involves a crash due to brake failure, it is unrelated to the structure issues but highlights a potential safety concern for buyers to consider.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
