BACK OVER PREVENTION
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence
A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the parking assist software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 2, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE25.

2024 Subaru Solterra Common Problems by Component
14 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
4 complaintsOwners report several issues with the 2024 Subaru Solterra's electrical system. Common complaints include problems with the facial recognition system failing to recognize faces consistently, particularly when drivers are looking forward or using mirrors, which could potentially lead to unintended stops. Additionally, the lane departure feature is described as overly sensitive, causing unintended swerving. Some owners also experience "EV System Malfunction" and "Drive Start Control Malfunction" alerts, which may indicate high-voltage system faults and have been linked to concerns about sudden power loss. Battery failures are another recurring issue, with reports of unexpected battery depletion and incorrect charging time estimates. These issues have left owners stranded and raise potential safety concerns.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the 2024 Subaru Solterra's forward collision avoidance system, specifically related to the facial recognition camera and adaptive cruise control. One complaint describes the facial recognition camera failing to detect the driver in bright sunlight, leading to the vehicle stopping unexpectedly in traffic. Additionally, the forward collision warning system occasionally brakes unnecessarily, mistakenly identifying a vehicle ahead, or fails to detect an actual vehicle, posing potential safety risks. Another owner links the failure of adaptive cruise control to an air conditioning compressor malfunction. These issues appear to occur intermittently, with one owner noting a frequency of 2 to 3 incidents every 100 miles.
LANE DEPARTURE
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the lane departure system in the 2024 Subaru Solterra, describing instances where the vehicle unexpectedly pulls to the right, particularly when attempting to avoid obstacles like pedestrians. The complaints highlight situations where the vehicle attempts to follow right-hand lane markings even when it may not be safe. Another owner describes broader electronic malfunctions, including the vehicle unexpectedly slowing down, activating facial recognition without consent, and displaying erroneous warnings. These issues reportedly begin shortly after purchase, around late June 2024, and continue despite efforts to resolve them. Safety implications include potential loss of control, with one owner noting the vehicle shut off while driving and lights turning off unexpectedly.

1 complaintSafety-relatedSubaru Solterra Car's automated breaking system did not work. We also suspect the changing from reverse to drive did not work as well. My wife while taking reverse and then tried to drive forward, but the drive forward did not work and when the car was accelerated it reversed and hit a tree. Rear automated breaking did not work causing damage to the car. Car was not drivable. Luckily no one was injured. There were no warning signs.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall repairs. However, the contact was informed that the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.
POWER TRAIN (1 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
1 complaintOn December 15, 2025, driving on a highway in low temperatures, my 2024 Subaru Solterra (VIN: [XXX] ) experienced a progressive loss of power. At 9:20 a.m., I departed NYC for Amenia, NY (91 miles). The range showed ~130 miles (no AC). For the first ~70 miles, the range indicator consistently remained higher than miles-to-destination, confirming sufficient charge to arrive safely. Around mile 70, the range buffer diminished rapidly. By 10:52 a.m. (approx. 85 miles in), the vehicle stopped responding normally to the accelerator. Speed became limited to 36–40 mph. The panel displayed: “Traction battery empty, Output power reduced.” However, immediately next to this warning, the dashboard displayed "7 mi" range and 4% battery. Relying on this data—which indicated sufficient range to reach a safe location—I continued. This contradictory information prevented an informed safety decision. Vehicle behavior became unstable. At 11:01 a.m., I pulled to the shoulder and called roadside assistance. After this stop, the vehicle appeared to recover traction, so I attempted to reach destination (6 miles away). However, unreliable power delivery persisted and the vehicle eventually failed completely at 11:25 a.m., leaving me stranded. Towing arrived at 2:00 p.m. This incident involves a critical range estimation failure. The vehicle promised 130 miles but failed after ~85 miles of conservative driving—a ~35% discrepancy. Furthermore, erratic behavior and conflicting data (showing available range while warning "Empty",) misled me into believing the vehicle was safe to operate, leaving me stranded in winter conditions on an active roadway. 1 complaintSafety-relatedCAR INADVERTENTLY ACCELERATED WHEN PARKING. RESULTS $17,000 DAMAGES AND STAGE TWO WHIPLASH. DEALER INSPECTED BLACK BOX AND CLAIMED ACCELERATOR WAS INADVERTENTLY PUSHED FULL THROTTLE, WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE AS MY WIFE ISN'T TALL ENOUGH TO PUSH FULL THROTTLE. SUBURU WILL NOT SHARE THE RESULTS OF THE TEST SO ASSUME A COVERUP AT THIS POINT AS MY WIFE SWEARS SHE DID NOT PUSH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. MANY COMPUTER COMPONENTS ARE ATTACHED TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, LIKE AUTOMATED PARKING AND CRUISE CONTROL. THIS CAR DID INDEED ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN.
STRUCTURE (1 complaints)
STRUCTURE
1 complaintDuring a large rainstorm [XXX] in Colorado Springs, CO when driving through water amid the downpour, the front fabric like wheel well liners came loose and caught underneath the vehicle causing the front plastic undercarriage cover to also come loose. Despite the rain and lightning, and to mitigate any further damage to the vehicle or safety risks to occupants, pulled over and removed the dragging covers from underneath the vehicle. Reasonable threat of danger to occupants and further damage to vehicle if continued to drive. Not removing these would have had made vehicle completely undriveable or debris could have caused risk to other vehicles on roadway. Vehicle was just acquired last month for Subaru dealership in Colorado Springs, CO. Vehicle was dropped off the morning of [XXX] at the same dealership’s service department for further analysis and remediation. Unsure if covered under warranty (really needs to be). Concerned about winter driving and moisture causing the same damage and risk. Also contacted USAA insurance on options. Awaiting resolution from local dealership. Publicly available information suggests that this problem is or has happened to others during rain events and has not been covered under warranty. Suggest manufacturer be held to repair and remediate issue under warranty with more durable parts. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
