UNKNOWN OR OTHER
8 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek frequently report issues with windshield integrity, noting cracks and chips occurring under normal driving conditions, often with minimal impact. These windshield problems are observed at various mileages, with some owners experiencing them within the first year of ownership. Additionally, one owner reports a serious safety incident involving unintended acceleration leading to a crash, although Subaru's inspection did not identify any mechanical faults. Another safety concern includes the moon roof shattering outward while driving. These issues suggest potential safety and financial concerns for prospective buyers, especially regarding windshield durability and associated repair costs.
VISIBILITY/WIPER
5 complaintsOwners report frequent issues with the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek's windshield cracking unexpectedly. Complaints commonly describe cracks appearing spontaneously or following minor impacts, such as small rocks, with some owners noting cracks spreading rapidly across the windshield. These issues are observed even with low mileage, as early as 1,800 miles, and often necessitate multiple windshield replacements within short timeframes. No crashes or loss of control are reported, but the rapid expansion of cracks is noted as potentially dangerous. Buyers considering a used Crosstrek should be aware of these recurring windshield durability concerns.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
3 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek report issues with the vehicle's electrical system, particularly involving unexpected stalling. One complaint describes the vehicle suddenly losing power at highway speeds, which is linked to a potential battery issue, occurring at approximately 41,000 miles. Another owner reports problems with the reverse automatic braking system activating unexpectedly, leading to stalling and multiple dashboard warning lights, including "check engine" and air conditioning codes U0401 and U0416. This stalling can occur both when backing up and when starting the vehicle, posing a safety risk in busy areas. Additionally, there is a recall related to LV terminal corrosion, with delays in obtaining necessary parts for repairs. These issues highlight potential safety implications due to loss of control and vehicle stalling.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (2 complaints)
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
2 complaintsOwners report issues with the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek's forward collision avoidance system, particularly with unexpected automatic braking. Complaints frequently mention the vehicle braking without obstruction, with one owner noting an increase in frequency. Another describes a scenario where the system mistakenly engaged due to a vehicle in a turn lane, almost causing a rear-end collision. These incidents highlight potential safety risks, especially at highway speeds. There is no specific mileage or timeline pattern indicated in the complaints, but the need for recalibration is suggested by Subaru in response to these issues.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (2 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
2 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek report issues with sudden unintended acceleration, particularly when maneuvering at low speeds, such as in parking situations. Affected vehicles do not display warning lights when the issue occurs. The problem is noted at approximately 34,000 miles. While no crashes or injuries are explicitly mentioned, the potential for loss of control during such acceleration incidents could pose a safety risk. Prospective buyers should be aware of this pattern, particularly if considering a vehicle with similar mileage.
STRUCTURE (2 complaints)
STRUCTURE
2 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek report issues related to the vehicle's structure, specifically involving unintended acceleration and sunroof integrity. One incident involves the car unexpectedly moving forward from a parked position, resulting in a crash into a building, which led to two injuries. Another complaint describes the sunroof glass shattering spontaneously while driving on the freeway, with no visible external cause, posing a risk of injury from falling glass. These issues highlight potential safety concerns, particularly regarding structural integrity and unexpected vehicle movement. The complaints do not specify mileage, suggesting these issues may occur at various points in the vehicle's lifespan.
SERVICE BRAKES (1 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
1 complaintI was driving on the highway in stop-and-go traffic when suddenly I found myself depressing the brake pedal to the floor and the car would not stop. Additionally, the eyesight function that prevents forward collisions did not alert for obstruction or stop the vehicle. I was able to put the vehicle in park and then tried to reengage the vehicle, but the brakes failed to respond. I was in the middle lane of a major highway. My vehicle could have harmed someone else, in addition to myself, and I was also at risk by being stopped in the middle of traffic. I could have died, had I been traveling at actual highways speed. No lights or warnings were on in the vehicle before, during, or after the incident. As of now, the dealership has been unable to replicate the issue, thought they still have the vehicle. They have not been able to identify the cause of the issue, but have also been unwilling to put the tests they have done in writing for me at this point. At this point, I have little confidence in my vehicle, despite it being a 2022 with low miles. I am terrified that this intermittent issue could happen again. The week prior, I had an experience where the acceleration and braking were not functioning as expected, but I had just pulled out of a parked position and this resolved after putting the vehicle in park and reengaging the vehicle.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
