Common symptoms include airbags failing to deploy despite significant front-end or side impact damage, with no prior warning lights or messages indicating a malfunction. Complaints often occur at various mileages, ranging from as low as 450 miles to around 70,000 miles. The lack of airbag deployment in these incidents presents a significant safety concern, as owners describe injuries that might have been mitigated with airbag protection. Additionally, some owners report persistent airbag warning lights and unresolved airbag system faults, impacting their confidence in the vehicle's safety features.
STEERING (7 complaints)
STEERING
7 complaintsOwners of the 2023 KIA Sportage commonly report issues related to the steering system, particularly involving failed tie rods and steering rack and pinion failures, with occurrences noted around 27,000 to 31,000 miles. Complaints frequently mention symptoms such as steering wheel shaking, abnormal rattling sounds, and difficulties in handling, which can lead to safety concerns like loss of control. Additionally, multiple owners describe problems with the lane keeping assistance system, which reportedly causes the vehicle to veer unexpectedly, posing a potential safety risk. Some reports also highlight premature wear of the steering wheel cover material, affecting grip. These issues are significant for potential buyers to consider, especially given the safety implications and the mileage ranges at which they occur.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (6 complaints)
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
6 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2023 KIA Sportage frequently report issues related to the Forward Collision Avoidance system, with several describing unexpected and forceful braking when no immediate threat is present. Complaints highlight incidents where the system misidentifies vehicles in adjacent lanes, leading to abrupt stops that have resulted in injuries. Additionally, the system's failure to engage in actual collision scenarios is noted, with one report involving a crash due to the system not activating as expected. These issues are reported at varying mileages, with one vehicle mentioned at 9,000 miles. Safety implications include the risk of collision due to sudden braking and the system's failure to prevent accidents, presenting concerns for potential buyers considering this model.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
