EXTERIOR LIGHTING
140 complaintsOwners report recurring issues with the 2024 GMC Canyon's exterior lighting, particularly with headlights flickering on and off intermittently. Complaints frequently mention this flickering occurs both while driving and when the vehicle is stationary, with some noting it happens every 2 to 3 minutes. Affected vehicles often have low mileage, with some reports as early as 5,000 miles. Additionally, some owners describe problems with the turn signals, where completing a right turn inadvertently activates the left turn signal. These lighting malfunctions pose potential safety risks, including confusion for other drivers and temporary loss of visibility at night.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
23 complaintsOwners report frequent issues with the 2024 GMC Canyon's electrical system, particularly involving headlight flickering and battery drainage. Many describe headlights and daytime running lights flickering every 1-2 minutes, which can confuse other drivers and lead to potentially unsafe interactions. Battery-related complaints mention spontaneous drainage, often requiring jumps, with some cases leading to impaired brake function after the vehicle is restarted. These problems appear soon after purchase, with some owners experiencing them within days or weeks. The flickering headlights and battery issues pose potential safety risks, especially during night driving or when towing trailers.
ENGINE
9 complaintsOwners report a recurring issue with the 2024 GMC Canyon related to coolant leaks, primarily from the upper radiator hose connection. Complaints frequently mention coolant smells, visible leaks, and the check engine light activating after significant coolant loss. These problems are noted as early as 10,000 miles and up to 40,000 miles, with some owners indicating difficulty obtaining replacement parts due to backorders. Several owners express concern about potential engine overheating due to these leaks, which could pose a safety risk if the vehicle becomes inoperable in traffic or adverse weather conditions. Additionally, there are isolated reports of propulsion issues where the vehicle loses power, with check engine lights and warnings appearing, though these are less frequently mentioned than the coolant leaks.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER (7 complaints)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
7 complaintsOwners of the 2024 GMC Canyon frequently report issues with the vehicle's infotainment and driver information systems. Complaints often mention that the infotainment system's mandatory warnings and subscription-related prompts create a significant distraction by requiring manual interaction while driving. Additionally, the driver information center's geometric background is noted as distracting, particularly at night. Some owners also describe problems with the vehicle's headlight controls, where the interface requires taking eyes off the road for extended periods. Structural concerns include reports of a sunroof shattering without impact and dashboard chrome trim causing glare. A few owners have experienced critical mechanical failures, such as a leaking radiator hose and a faulty alternator, which could lead to potential safety risks like engine failure or loss of vehicle control. These issues are reported at varying mileages, with some occurring shortly after purchase.
STEERING (5 complaints)
STEERING
5 complaintsOwners report several steering-related issues with the 2024 GMC Canyon. A recurring problem involves the vehicle signaling unintended turns, particularly a left turn following a completed right turn, which occurs intermittently. Another common issue is steering "stickiness" due to rack and pinion assembly failure, which requires forceful wheel manipulation to complete turns, noted as occurring at approximately 2,200 miles. Multiple owners also describe sudden loss of power steering and reduced acceleration while driving at highway speeds, accompanied by dashboard warnings and loss of traction control, leading to near-loss of vehicle control. These issues have significant safety implications, particularly at high speeds, and prospective buyers should be aware of these reported patterns.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (3 complaints)
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
3 complaintsOwners report issues with the forward collision avoidance system in the 2024 GMC Canyon, specifically involving the adaptive cruise control and automatic braking. Complaints frequently mention the system improperly detecting oncoming traffic, leading to unnecessary and abrupt braking, which jolts occupants and creates a risk of rear-end collisions. Multiple owners describe incidents where the vehicle brakes suddenly without apparent cause, even when no obstacles are present. These issues have been reported despite the absence of diagnostic alarms or codes, and some owners note that dealers have been unable to provide a fix, citing a pending software update. Safety implications include potential loss of control and near-miss rear-end collisions, with no specific mileage range consistently noted across complaints.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (2 complaints)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 GMC Canyon report issues related to vehicle speed control, specifically with RPMs remaining high and causing unintended acceleration when coasting. One owner notes the vehicle continues to accelerate at 11 to 13 mph even after releasing the gas pedal, requiring significant brake pressure to stop. Another complaint involves the Adaptive Cruise Control system, which unexpectedly applies brakes at highway speeds, slowing the vehicle by 10-20 mph without any obstruction in sight. This issue reportedly occurs from the first day of ownership and has been acknowledged by the manufacturer as a known problem. These issues present potential safety risks, particularly the aggressive braking, which could lead to collisions from behind.
STRUCTURE (2 complaints)
STRUCTURE
2 complaintsOwners of the 2024 GMC Canyon report issues with the structural integrity of the roof. Complaints frequently mention that the exterior roof panel bends or caves inward, particularly during routine activities such as going through a car wash. Symptoms include the roof popping in and out and being easily pushed in by hand, which suggests a lack of structural support. These issues are noted at low mileages, around 4,000 miles. Safety implications are highlighted by owners who express concerns about the roof's potential weakness in rollover situations. This information is relevant for potential buyers considering the structural condition of used models.
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
2 complaintsOwners report two distinct power train issues with the 2024 GMC Canyon. The first involves a failure of the exhaust valve in cylinder #4, leading to rough idling and eventual engine shutdown, with no prior warning or dashboard alerts, occurring around 10,000 miles. The second issue pertains to the 8-speed transmission's valve body, which is described as causing erratic behavior, such as unexpected downshifting and rapid deceleration, significantly increasing the risk of rear-end collisions. This problem has resulted in prolonged vehicle inoperability due to parts being on backorder. These issues highlight potential safety implications and operational challenges for prospective buyers.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent— Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good— Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed— Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky— Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
