The first is difficulty starting, characterized by long crank times and a tendency for the vehicle to start only on the second attempt, often accompanied by a strong fuel odor. The second issue involves sudden engine failure while driving, with one owner specifically noting this occurred on the interstate without prior warning, which could lead to unsafe situations. These issues are reported as occurring even at low mileages, such as 24,000 miles. Additionally, one owner mentions difficulty refueling and engine lag when accelerating. These patterns suggest potential reliability concerns for prospective buyers, particularly regarding starting issues and unexpected engine shutdowns.

2 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Dodge Durango report issues with the fuel system, primarily involving starting difficulties. Complaints frequently mention that the vehicle often fails to start on the first attempt but consistently starts on the second try. Another symptom described is a slow engine start that occasionally leads to the engine shutting off. These issues are reported within the first month of ownership, suggesting they may occur early in the vehicle's life. Safety implications such as crashes or fires are not mentioned in the complaints, but the potential for being stranded is a concern for owners. This information may be useful for prospective buyers considering the reliability of the starting system in this model.
SERVICE BRAKES (2 complaints)
SERVICE BRAKES
2 complaintsOwners of the 2022 Dodge Durango report issues related to the braking system. One owner describes a situation where the braking system failed twice within a nine-month period, requiring the brake pedal to be pressed all the way to the floor to stop the vehicle. This issue was confirmed by a dealership, and there were no warning lights or messages to indicate a problem beforehand. Another owner mentions a delay in recall repair availability for a related issue but has not experienced a brake failure. These complaints highlight potential safety implications, particularly the risk of delayed braking response, which could be critical for prospective buyers to consider.

1 complaintSafety-relatedVehicle Sudden Unintended Acceleration – Safety Complaint Vehicle: 2022 Dodge Durango Weather: Rain Situation: The vehicle was at an almost complete stop at a red light and in a 5 feet distance from the car in front. Without pressing the accelerator, the car suddenly surged forward at significant force and hit the vehicle in front of us. There was no driver input on the accelerator. The incident appeared to be caused by an electronic or computer malfunction, possibly related to moisture from the rain. This could have resulted in serious injury or death if another vehicle had not been in front of us to stop the acceleration. Please investigate this issue, as it represents a major safety risk.
WHEELS (1 complaints)
WHEELS
1 complaintTire Pressure Sensors are not working properly. Every time I use the vehicle, I'm not sure if I need to pull over and check the tire pressure. The numbers are off considerably. It will not stay to adjusted tire pressure. It will randomly put out numbers for each tire The Dealer tried 3 times to fix the issue and followed a number of requested items to check from the Manufacture without success. They opened a STAR case. The case manager said it was weather related. This can't be, they are not just 1-2 pounds off, there generating random numbers. The dealer does NOT agree with the assessment. They also raised the issue to the regional engineering department. This was unsuccessful. This has been occurring a few months after I bought the car. NOTE: The pictures enclosed were all morning readings and the vehicle is garaged

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
