ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

7 complaints

Owners report several electrical issues with the 2022 BMW IX, particularly related to software malfunctions and recall-related delays. Common symptoms include sudden power loss, false emergency stops, and various driver assistance errors, such as incorrect speed limit displays and automatic braking. These issues typically emerge within the first few thousand miles, with some owners experiencing problems as early as 1,000 miles. Safety concerns are evident, as some reports mention the vehicle dying while in motion and false emergency stops, both of which could lead to hazardous situations. Buyers should be aware of potential delays in recall repairs and the possibility of recurring electrical system failures.

STEERING

5 complaints

Owners report experiencing a recurring issue with the steering system in the 2022 BMW iX, characterized by error messages indicating "Changed Steering Effort" and a need to visit a service center. Complaints frequently mention a significant increase in steering effort, making the vehicle difficult to maneuver, particularly when power steering is lost. The issue appears to manifest intermittently and can occur as early as under 10,000 miles or within the first two years of ownership. Multiple owners describe the problem as a known defect that requires replacement of the steering rack, with some noting that the issue has persisted beyond the factory warranty period. Safety implications are highlighted, as the sudden increase in steering effort could potentially lead to loss of vehicle control, especially at highway speeds.

5 complaints total

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

4 complaintsSafety-related

Owners of the 2022 BMW IX report issues primarily related to malfunctioning parking assist systems and unexpected vehicle recalls. Complaints frequently mention the rear parking assist failing to detect obstacles, leading to a crash when the vehicle did not stop as expected. Additionally, there are reports of a rear bumper detaching during heavy rain, which was initially attributed to a collision by the manufacturer despite the owner's claim of no impact. Some owners also describe confusion over recalls, such as a battery recall that was not communicated to the dealership, resulting in vehicles being sold with unresolved issues. These incidents occur without prior warning lights or messages, and in one case, under wet conditions. Safety implications include the potential for crashes or parts detaching while driving.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (4 complaints)

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

4 complaints

Owners report recurring issues with the vehicle speed control in the 2022 BMW IX, particularly involving unintended acceleration. Multiple owners describe instances where the vehicle accelerates without input, often after starting up and with cruise control off. This unintended acceleration is sometimes noted in "B" drive mode, where the vehicle unexpectedly lunges forward instead of slowing down as expected with one-pedal driving. These events generally occur at low speeds, such as in parking lots, and are resolved by braking, but they pose potential safety risks, especially in close proximity to other vehicles. The complaints do not specify mileage ranges, but the repeated nature of the issues suggests a pattern that prospective buyers should consider.

4 complaints total
POWER TRAIN (3 complaints)

POWER TRAIN

3 complaints

This vehicle was involved in a collision, none of the safety features worked. The front end collision warning did not go off. The automatic emergency braking did not engage. The Car jolted forward after the collision and did not stop, potentially risking another collision. The SOS or emergency collision BMW assist was not activated, there was no call from anyone from BMW after the accident. No warning lights or collision indicators went off prior to collision as they should have. This vehicle is puts the safety of others at risk if it fails to stop after a collision (regardless of the speed of impact) as well as quick acceleration post collision.

The design of the front drivers and passenger seat includes a hard insert right in the center of the headrest. My wife's head directly hits this hard insert when she is sitting normally in the seat. We are very concerned that in the event of an accident, she would suffer a serious head injury.

1. The rear wiper has a frame made of plastic, with a simple T shaped connector. I have found it laying in my driveway 4 times now, and have only owned this 2022 BMW iX since November. If there is any resistance at all when you turn the wiper on, like some snow or frost, the T shaped connector will un-click, the wiper will tip sideways, and fall off the car. This could happen at speed if you engage the wiper with ANYTHING on your back window and could fly into the car behind you (have not experienced this yet...). 2, The Adaptive Braking can engage in very weird situations. Driving south on Rt 3 in New Hampshire (the Everett Turnpike, I think it's called) after dark between exit 5 and exit 4, I was in the middle of Rt 3's three lanes with NO traffic around me at all. The iX decelerated suddenly by about 15-20 mph, so thank god no vehicles behind me! Realized at that point what had happened - Rt 3 curves left at this point as you are heading south. At this spot, the Exit 4 ramp goes straight off the road at an angle. The ramp is short and quickly comes to a set of traffic lights. This traffic light is right at the height of Rt 3, as the ramp dips somewhat for this exit, so the traffic lights are at the height of car brake lights at this point. The traffic lights were red and there were 6 or 7 cars braked showing red brake lights. I believe the BMW iX adaptive braking incorrectly engaged at this point, thinking this was traffic that was on Rt 3 and that the BMW iX needed to stop for it. This traffic was actually 300 - 400 yards down the ramp, but the adaptive braking engaged strongly to 'avoid a collisioin'.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
