ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

12 complaints

Owners report frequent alternator failures in the 2021 Audi Q8, often resulting in complete electrical system shutdowns while driving. Typical symptoms include warning lights for electrical malfunctions, loss of power to critical systems such as steering and braking, and in some cases, the vehicle becoming immobile. These issues often occur without prior warning and can leave drivers stranded on highways, posing significant safety risks. Complaints often involve vehicles with mileage ranging from around 17,000 to over 50,000 miles. Additionally, there are reports of delays in starting and various malfunction indicators, with some owners noting extensive wait times for repairs due to parts being back-ordered.

FUEL SYSTEM

4 complaints

Owners of the 2021 Audi Q8 report issues primarily related to the fuel system, with a notable recall affecting this component. One owner describes a failure where the vehicle stalls and displays messages such as "Loss of Power" and "Reduced RPMs to 3,000" while driving at speeds between 50-70 MPH, which suggests a potential safety risk due to loss of control. This issue occurs around 60,000 miles, with the fuel pump identified as the failed component. Other owners mention receiving recall notifications for the fuel system but report delays in parts availability, resulting in an extended wait for repairs. No crashes or fires are reported in the complaints, but the stalling issue emphasizes the importance of addressing the fuel system recall promptly.

POWER TRAIN

3 complaints

Owners report issues with the 2021 Audi Q8's power train, primarily involving loss of power and unusual vehicle behavior. One owner describes a sudden loss of power due to a failed water pump while merging onto a busy highway, which occurred just outside of the warranty period at around 50,000 miles. Another owner notes a feeling akin to driving on ice or oil slicks when navigating curves and changing lanes, attributed to the Quattro all-wheel drive system, despite service checks indicating normal operation. Additionally, a third owner experienced the vehicle shutting off at highway speeds with an electrical problem warning, at approximately 3,500 miles. These issues suggest potential safety implications, such as unexpected power loss and control difficulties, which may be of concern to prospective buyers.

BACK OVER PREVENTION (2 complaints)

BACK OVER PREVENTION

2 complaints

Owners of the 2021 Audi Q8 report issues with the back over prevention system, specifically the rear-view camera failing to operate when the vehicle is in reverse. Symptoms include the rear-view camera not displaying properly, with screens going blank or blinking white, leading to a lack of visibility for the driver. These issues are noted around 17,000 miles and have been described as recurring, although they are not consistently replicable at the dealership, resulting in unresolved problems. The inability to rely on the rear-view camera poses potential safety risks during reversing maneuvers, as it may impair the driver's ability to detect obstacles or pedestrians. Buyers considering a used 2021 Audi Q8 should be aware of these reported issues with the back over prevention system.

2 complaints total

ENGINE

2025-12-30

The engine (internal mechanical failure) malfunctioned. The vehicle developed a persistent ticking/knocking noise from the engine bay, and the authorized Audi dealer diagnosed the issue as requiring a full engine replacement. The vehicle is currently available for inspection upon request. A catastrophic engine failure presents a risk of sudden loss of power, stalling, or engine seizure, which could occur while driving at speed or in traffic. This creates a potential risk of loss of vehicle control, inability to accelerate, or being stranded in unsafe conditions, endangering both the driver and other motorists. The problem was confirmed by an authorized Audi dealership, which diagnosed the vehicle and stated that a complete engine replacement is required. The estimated repair cost provided by the dealer is approximately $26,000 (so far in parts only). The vehicle has been inspected and diagnosed by an authorized Audi dealership. At this time, it has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. Audi corporate has been contacted for review. The primary symptom was a persistent ticking noise from the engine bay, which began around late December 2025 / early January 2026. There were no immediate warning lights or dashboard messages at the onset of the noise. The noise progressively worsened, prompting dealer inspection and diagnosis.

Subject: Spontaneous Sunroof Shattering – 2021 Audi Q8 Summary: On 8/5/2025, while driving my 2021 Audi Q8 under normal conditions, the sunroof suddenly shattered without warning. There was a loud popping sound, followed by glass breaking and falling onto the closed sunroof shade. There were no visible signs of impact from external objects, and weather conditions were normal at the time of the incident. The vehicle was not involved in a collision and was being operated safely. This incident created a serious safety hazard, as the loud popping sound once the sunroof ruptured could have cause me to get into an accident. I am also lucky that the sun roof shade was closed or the pieces could have struck me inside my vehicle. I will be contacting insurance and Audi dealership regarding the damage. However, after researching online, I found similar complaints from other Audi owners, suggesting this may be a recurring issue with panoramic sunroofs across multiple models. I am reporting this to the NHTSA because I believe this could indicate a potential defect in the sunroof glass or its installation. I request an investigation into this matter to ensure the safety of other drivers who may be at risk.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
