2025 Volkswagen Tiguan Common Problems by Component
18 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
6 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan report several issues, with a common pattern involving the spontaneous shattering of the panoramic sunroof. This issue is noted in multiple complaints, with one owner specifying an occurrence at 1,243 miles while the vehicle was stationary. Another frequent issue involves snow accumulation between the rim and brake, leading to significant vehicle shaking while driving. Additionally, some owners mention problems with the rear backup camera going dark when reversing, obstructing visibility. One complaint also highlights a crash involving a deer, with subsequent parts availability issues for repairs. These reports suggest potential safety implications, particularly concerning visibility and structural integrity.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
3 complaintsOwners report frequent malfunctions with the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan's forward collision avoidance system, where the vehicle's emergency brake engages unexpectedly. Complaints often describe the car braking or shifting into park without any obstacles present, sometimes occurring when the vehicle is at a stoplight or moving at low speeds, around 15-20 mph. These issues have been noted by some owners within the first three months of ownership, with one owner experiencing the problem up to 15 times. Several reports mention that the automatic emergency braking system activates inappropriately, accompanied by temporary warning lights on the dashboard, although these lights often turn off after restarting the vehicle. While no accidents have been reported, the unexpected braking and shifting into park present potential safety risks, as owners express concern about the vehicle's reliability and control.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
2 complaintsOwners report electrical system issues with the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan, particularly involving cruise control and unexpected vehicle behavior. Complaints frequently mention that the cruise control fails to adjust speed using steering wheel controls and occasionally causes the vehicle to rapidly change speed on its own. Another issue described involves the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly at a stop, with gears becoming inoperable and the engine cranking without user input. These problems are noted within the first week of ownership, suggesting early onset. Safety implications include potential loss of control and vehicle shutdowns in traffic, which could be hazardous.
POWER TRAIN (2 complaints)
POWER TRAIN
2 complaintsOwners of the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan frequently report issues with the power train, particularly involving the electronic parking brake and engine performance. One common complaint is that the electronic parking brake engages without driver input, causing the vehicle to shift into Park unexpectedly, often during low-speed conditions such as at stoplights or in traffic. This issue, reported to occur multiple times weekly, poses a safety risk due to the potential for sudden stops leading to rear-end collisions. Another issue described involves the engine stumbling, stuttering, and dying without warning lights, requiring drivers to pull off the road for safety. These problems have been noted shortly after vehicle purchase, with no successful resolution reported from inspections.
STRUCTURE (2 complaints)
STRUCTURE
2 complaintsOwners of the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan report issues related to the vehicle's structure, with specific complaints about the materials and components used. One owner notes a discrepancy in the door materials, with the front doors featuring leather and padding, while the rear doors are made of hard plastic, raising concerns about potential injuries in a side impact. Another owner describes a problem with the lower shutter in the front of the car breaking off shortly after purchase, which led to engine overheating due to inadequate cooling. This issue appears to occur at very low mileage, as it was reported after only one use. Safety implications include potential bodily injuries from the rear door materials and engine overheating due to structural component failure.
SEATS (1 complaints)
SEATS
1 complaintThe emergency brake came on and the engine turned off on its own , may be a faulty sensor in the seat. Sensor is detecting no one is in the drivers seat, and you are sitting in it. Car put on emergency brake and shut engine off at red light, as it turned green and you move foot from brake to gas pedal, putting car at risk of collision from behind. Dealership said they can’t reproduce this and therefore can’t fix it. Told Don’t Move when you’re driving by dealership. Car gave no warning. Happens at red lights and while backing up in reverse. The problem appeared on the evening I received car. Dealership said the service supervisor drove car and can’t get it to reproduce problem, so can’t fix it. Told don’t move while driving. Your car is ready Showed service advisor on the instrument panel in the car diagram the front two seats are not registering in the diagram, took car back into service and provided loaner once again.
AIR BAGS (1 complaints)
AIR BAGS
1 complaintHello, I have a VW Tiguan 2025 lease since June2025. i just received a Safety Recall letter from VW on February 2026 advising that because of a potential airbag defect I should not have anyone seating in the passenger seat of my car until further notice. a recall repair is not yet available. How can VW asks to keep a car with such inconvenience of not being able to have a passenger?
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM (1 complaints)
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
1 complaintI purchased Tiguan SE on July 2, 2025 and 6 days later with about 200 miles on vehicle, check engine light appeared with message ‘fuel system error.’ I was very disappointed that such a new vehicle reported an error on a critical system. Dealership had trouble identifying source of light and advice of VW technical advice was advised to replace entire fuel tank. This clearly sounds like a manufacture defect and I would like to know if other Tiguan owners have experienced similar issues. Given that VW has a history of defrauding consumers over diesel fuel systems, could this be another fuel problem. So far, upon contacting manufacturer they have brushed aside concerns stating it’s covered warranty and not acknowledging diminution of value that such an early defect could have on the resale/economic value of this car.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
