2023 Toyota Sienna Common Problems by Component
52 owner complaints grouped by vehicle system.
SERVICE BRAKES
17 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report that the 2023 Toyota Sienna experiences issues with the braking system, primarily involving a sudden disengagement of brakes during deceleration. Complaints frequently mention that the vehicle lurches forward unexpectedly, often when braking on uneven surfaces, downhill, or while turning, requiring drivers to apply additional brake pressure. This issue is described as intermittent and difficult to replicate during dealership inspections, with some owners noting it has been present since purchase. The problem is reported across various mileage ranges, with some vehicles experiencing it as early as 20,000 miles. Safety implications include near-miss collisions and one reported crash, highlighting a potential risk of loss of control. Prospective buyers should be aware of these reports and consider the potential for unexpected braking behavior when evaluating this vehicle.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
14 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners of the 2023 Toyota Sienna frequently report issues with the rear entertainment system obstructing the view through the rearview mirror, which poses a visibility hazard. Complaints also describe incidents of unintended acceleration, sometimes resulting in crashes, with some owners noting this occurs while parking or maneuvering at low speeds. Additional issues include reports of sunroofs spontaneously shattering while driving, and sporadic problems with the tire pressure monitoring system and key fob connectivity. These complaints often arise in vehicles with mileage as low as 0 miles, indicating potential concerns even in new models. Safety implications are significant, with three reported crashes linked to unexpected vehicle movement or acceleration.
VISIBILITY/WIPER
6 complaintsOwners of the 2023 Toyota Sienna report two main issues related to visibility and wipers. Multiple complaints highlight that the rear entertainment system obstructs the rear view when in use, as the screen blocks the rear view mirror, making it difficult for drivers to see vehicles or emergency services approaching from behind. Some owners suggest the absence of a digital mirror exacerbates this issue. Additionally, there are reports of windshield wipers intermittently failing to operate, with one owner experiencing this problem at low mileage, within two months of purchase. These issues present potential safety risks, particularly in adverse weather or emergency situations.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (6 complaints)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
6 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report several electrical system issues with the 2023 Toyota Sienna. A recurring problem involves the fuel gauge providing inaccurate readings, with some drivers experiencing rapid depletion of indicated fuel range. Another issue involves the vehicle's unintended acceleration, with one incident resulting in a collision. Additionally, multiple owners mention difficulties related to the vehicle's keyfob, specifically the prolonged wait time for a second keyfob, which raises concerns about potential lock-ins with children inside. Complaints also describe a battery drain issue linked to the rear hatch kick sensor, particularly in cold and wet conditions. These reports highlight potential safety implications, especially concerning unintended acceleration and the risk of children being locked inside the vehicle.
AIR BAGS (3 complaints)
AIR BAGS
3 complaintsSafety-relatedOwners report issues with the 2023 Toyota Sienna's airbag system, particularly involving non-deployment during crashes. Complaints frequently mention water intrusion affecting electrical components related to the airbags and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), with warning indicators appearing shortly after vehicle delivery in 2023. In two incidents, airbags failed to deploy during crashes, resulting in injuries such as a rib fracture and brain concussion, despite significant vehicle damage. These reports suggest that airbag system failures may occur soon after the vehicle is purchased, potentially impacting crash safety. Used car buyers should be aware of these issues, especially regarding airbag deployment reliability in collision scenarios.
VISIBILITY (1 complaints)
VISIBILITY
1 complaintThe contact owns a 2023 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH, there was a popping sound coming from the sunroof, and the contact discovered that the sunroof had shattered. Neither the dealer nor an independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE (1 complaints)
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
1 complaintThe (PCS) Precollision System has been already set to LOW sensitivity, but every once in awhile when pulling in to oncoming traffic the vehicle would think there's still a car and just stalls for a few seconds (nonresponsive to acceleration pedal) leading to a dangerous occurrence where I could be hit by a vehicle because I've basically stopped in an active intersection. My vehicle is clean, so no dirt blocking the sensors, and I also own a 5th gen RAV4 without this issue.
STRUCTURE (1 complaints)
STRUCTURE
1 complaintI parked the car in the garage and my child left the passanger side sliding door open. Then, the door malfunctioned because it would not electronically close after being left open more than 80 minutes. I tried to manually close the door, but encountered resistance. Afterwards, I pushed the "power door main switch" and was able to close the door manually. Our safety was at risk because if a dangerous person or aniaml was approaching, there is no intuitive way to quickly close the door. The vehicle DID NOT provide any warning messages about the door malfunction.
SEATS (1 complaints)
SEATS
1 complaintThe 3rd row seats in the Sienna do not stay stowed as there is no lock. This creates a very dangerous situation when braking. I just got this car a few days ago and already have issues. When I brake or go over bumps, the stowed 3rd row seat pops up a little. That's okay, until you brake. In one instance, I had to brake harder than usual during a traffic incident in front of me, and the 3rd row seats flew forward (up and out of the stowed position) and slammed into the 2nd row seats. It was loud and scary. My child was sitting in the 3rd row (split 3rd row so only one side was stowed) and the seat flying up and forward almost broke her leg as she was sitting with one leg out to the side. We even had items on top of the seat to keep the 3rd row from bouncing and popping up, but that is not a safe solution either. This is an issue reported for recent years on Toyota forums. I called Toyota to report it. I have read the owner's manual to make sure I am stowing the seats correctly. Any animals or children near a stowed 3rd row seat could be seriously injured.
SEAT BELTS (1 complaints)
SEAT BELTS
1 complaintIn a couple of instances the latch mechanism in 2 different seats became loose during trip. In one ocassion there was an alarm while in the second ocassion we realized when removing the car seat of an infant.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores
Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.
Key Ranking Factors
Complaint Severity
NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.
Repair Costs
Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.
Recall Impact
Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.
Issue Diversity
Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.
Scores are grouped into four tiers:
- 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
- 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
- 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
- 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution
Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
