One owner describes a severe banging noise when turning or transitioning from reverse to forward motion, attributed to the bracket cracking and breaking in two separate places. This issue reportedly occurred without hitting potholes and was first noticed in a driveway. The complaint highlights a significant safety risk, suggesting the potential for the rear wheel to detach while driving. Another owner mentions a separate issue involving severe jerking during acceleration, accompanied by a knocking sound from the engine, though this is not directly related to the suspension. These reports do not specify mileage ranges, but they underscore potential safety implications, particularly concerning the rear differential bracket failure.

I am concerned with the visibility of my car in the night/dark. When driving my car in the night I get flashed by divers behind me. I am almost completely sure it is because the rear lights are so small and dim. This car was not available for a test drive and often isn’t so how is a potential buyer to know of this issue unless it is pointed out? All of the demonstration videos are of the highest model which comes with the adequate lighting. The only way to have an adequately visible Corolla Cross (from behind) is to upgrade to the highest model. I worry that I am at a higher risk from other drivers of being rear ended when driving at night/on dimly lit streets.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
