SERVICE BRAKES

14 complaints

Owners report frequent premature rear brake pad and rotor wear on the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder, often requiring replacements as early as 12,000 to 20,000 miles. Complaints commonly mention rear brakes wearing out significantly faster than the front, with some attributing this to the small size of the rear pads and potential issues with the electronic parking brake. Symptoms include noticeable vibrations when braking and the need for rear brake replacements, even under normal driving conditions. Some reports highlight safety concerns, such as increased stopping distances and the potential for brakes to fail unexpectedly, which could pose risks to drivers unaware of the accelerated wear. Buyers should be aware of these issues when considering a used 2023 Pathfinder, especially if the vehicle has higher mileage.

POWER TRAIN (11 complaints)

POWER TRAIN

11 complaintsSafety-related

Owners report several powertrain issues with the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder, primarily involving unintended acceleration and transmission problems. Complaints frequently mention the vehicle unexpectedly shifting from Drive to Neutral, especially during idle or when using the auto start/stop function, which some owners say has led to near-miss incidents in traffic. Transmission issues also include difficulty finding gears, particularly when accelerating from a stop, with some owners experiencing delayed engagement or forced gear selection. These problems are typically reported between 14,700 and 44,000 miles. Safety implications are noted, including one incident involving a crash due to the vehicle rolling away after being parked. ENGINE

5 complaints

Owners of the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder frequently report issues with the engine unexpectedly shutting off, particularly during acceleration or after using the idle stop feature. Symptoms include the engine hesitating, stalling, or shifting into neutral unexpectedly, often from a stopped or slowed position, which has led to near-miss rear-end collisions. These problems often occur at low mileages, with one report noting issues at approximately 5,931 miles. Safety concerns are significant, as the engine's unpredictable behavior can result in loss of power during critical driving situations, such as merging or turning in traffic. Multiple owners mention that dealerships have been unable to consistently diagnose or resolve these issues, with some waiting for parts like fuel pumps for extended periods.

A common problem involves the passenger side captain seat frame, which exhibits excessive play and noise, with one owner noting that the issue persisted even after a frame replacement. This problem was linked to a crash involving a deer, although the insurance company did not attribute the seat malfunction to the accident. Another owner describes an electronics issue with the second row rear seat, where the seatbelt alarm chimes unnecessarily, indicating an unbuckled seatbelt when the seat is unoccupied. This issue requires keeping the seatbelt buckled to silence the alarm. These complaints highlight potential safety concerns, particularly with seat integrity during accidents and electronic malfunctions that may distract drivers.

How We Calculate Reliability Scores

Auto Reliability Index scores are calculated on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula that combines multiple public data sources. Each factor is weighted based on its predictive value for real-world ownership experience.

Key Ranking Factors

1

Complaint Severity

NHTSA owner complaints weighted by component category (e.g., powertrain, safety systems, electronics, cosmetic) — safety-critical issues carry more weight than cosmetic ones. Adjusted for sales volume so high-volume models aren't unfairly penalized.

2

Repair Costs

Independent reliability ratings based on repair frequency, average repair costs, and severity of typical repairs for each model.

3

Recall Impact

Number of NHTSA recalls weighted by severity. “Stop driving” and fire-risk recalls are penalized more heavily than minor software or labeling recalls.

4

Issue Diversity

Measures how many major vehicle systems (engine, transmission, electrical, braking, etc.) have recorded complaints. A vehicle with issues spread across many systems may indicate systemic quality issues.

Scores are grouped into four tiers:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Top-tier reliability, minimal issues
  • 60–79: Good — Reliable with some minor concerns
  • 40–59: Mixed — Notable issues, research before buying
  • 0–39: Risky — Significant problems, proceed with caution

Data is sourced from NHTSA recall records, owner complaint filings, and independent repair databases. Scores are recalculated as new data becomes available. While the weighting model is proprietary, all underlying data sources are public and traceable.
