Silverado electrical complaints by model year

The 2019 model year has the most electrical complaints, at 149, and also the highest rate against sales. The 2022 year follows with 99, then 2018, 2024, 2021 and 2020, which sit fairly close together. The 2023 year is lower at 39. The 2025 year has only 13 complaints and 2026 has none, but those trucks have had little time on the road, so the low counts say little about how they will hold up. Fire reports are heaviest in 2020, then 2019 and 2021.

Owner complaints filed with NHTSA under electrical system. Newer model years have had less time to collect complaints.

What goes wrong

Sudden, unexplained electrical faults are the main pattern. Engines, gauges and lights cut out and come back. Instrument clusters and infotainment screens go blank. Strings of brake, stability control and trailer brake warnings appear at once. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault, so the truck leaves the shop and the problem returns. Newer trucks add a power tailgate that opens on its own and driver-assist features that drop out.

The serious side is fire and loss of control. Fire reports appear in every model year from 2018 through 2023, and 2020 has the most. Named sources include a seat heater, a rear wiring harness, a blower motor, a harness rubbing on a bolt behind the fuse box, and diesel block heater cords. Several trucks burned to a total loss, some while parked. Crash reports involve brakes that stopped working, airbags that did not deploy, a tailgate that lowered unnoticed, and collision alerts that stayed silent.

Symptoms owners report

Sudden power loss and shutdowns

The engine, gauges, lights and radio cut out and return, sometimes in low-speed turns. Other trucks drop into reduced engine power on the highway or shut down and will not restart. Dealers often cannot reproduce it. Dead batteries and voltage drops show up alongside.

Warning light floods

Brake, parking brake, stability control, ECM and trailer brake warnings light up together. Some trucks are limited to 43 mph or stuck in low gear, and some owners report weak or no braking. A stuck Shift to Park message also appears in 2019 trucks.

Fires, including parked trucks

Owners report smoke and flames from under the hood, behind the cab, under the dash and near the hitch wiring. Some trucks burned while parked or after sitting at a dealer. Several were total losses, and one fire spread to a nearby home.

Power tailgate opens by itself

The tailgate drops while driving or cycles open and shut overnight until the battery dies. Dealers traced some cases to water in the tailgate switch. In one crash, the lowered tailgate hit a wall without the driver noticing.

Screens, cameras and driver-assist dropouts

Infotainment screens and clusters freeze or go black, and the backup camera, turn signal sounds or speed readout can vanish until a restart. Collision alerts, lane departure and blind spot warnings drop out. Repeat software updates and module swaps often fail.

Trailer brake control faults

The factory trailer brake control throws false warnings, fails to power the trailer brakes, blows its fuse under load, or drops its connection while towing. Reports come mostly from owners towing with heavy-duty trucks.

When the problems start

Problems can start very early. One 2020 truck had a dead battery at 1400 miles with no lights left on. Another 2020 truck showed stability control and antilock brake errors at 2700 miles, before its first oil change. Other filings describe fires on low-mileage trucks, but most filings give no mileage, so no clear age pattern shows.

Repairs and recalls

Owners report long, repeated dealer visits. Faults often cannot be reproduced, and software updates and module swaps often fail to fix them. Some owners wait on back-ordered instrument clusters. One 2020 owner said the dealer traced a harness fire to chafing on a tie bar bolt and concluded the bolt needed shortening. Federal recall records list two recalls. Recall 19V888000 covers 2019 and 2020 Silverado 1500 trucks with possible excess glue on the battery cable rings at the alternator. Dealers clean and reattach the connection. Recall 24V320000 covers the 2024 Silverado EV, where rear drive unit wiring may cause loss of drive power. Dealers replace the unit free. The data gives no repair costs.

Checking a used Silverado for electrical problems

  • Run the VIN through the federal recall lookup and confirm the 2019 or 2020 battery cable recall work was done.
  • Watch the cluster and screen through a full test drive, and restart the truck twice to see if they freeze or go black.
  • Look for warning lights at startup and while driving, especially brake, stability control, trailer brake and Shift to Park messages.
  • Cycle the power tailgate several times, and ask if it ever opened by itself or drained the battery.
  • Inspect wiring behind the fuse box, near the hitch, and at any block heater cord for rubbed insulation or melted connectors.
  • Ask for dealer records showing repeat visits for power loss, battery drain or warnings that were never reproduced.

Chevrolet Silverado Electrical Problems: common questions

Which Silverado years have the most electrical problems?
The 2019 model year has the most electrical complaints, followed by 2022. The 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2024 years are close behind. The 2020 year has the most fire reports. The 2025 and 2026 years have few or no complaints, but they are too new to judge.
Is it safe to drive a Silverado with electrical warnings?
Treat brake, stability control and trailer brake warnings as serious. Owners report weak or no braking, sudden power loss, and speed limits while driving. Some say these faults appeared with no warning. Have the truck checked before driving it further, especially if you tow.
Has the Silverado been recalled for electrical problems?
Federal recall records list two in this area. Recall 19V888000 covers certain 2019 and 2020 Silverado 1500 trucks with a battery cable and alternator connection problem. Recall 24V320000 covers the 2024 Silverado EV rear drive unit. Check the VIN to see whether a recall applies to a specific truck.
Why do Silverado trucks catch fire from electrical faults?
Owners name several sources: a seat heater, rear wiring harness, blower motor, a harness chafing behind the fuse box, and diesel block heater cords. In other cases the cause was never found. Some trucks burned while parked, so fires have not been limited to driving.
How much does it cost to fix Silverado electrical problems?
The data gives no repair costs for this problem. Owners mostly describe repeat dealer visits, software updates, and module or cluster replacements that sometimes failed to fix the fault. Recall repairs listed in federal records are free. Get a written diagnosis before paying for parts.
