C-Class electrical complaints by model year
Model years 2021 and 2020 have the most electrical complaints, at 75 and 64, and they also lead once sales are counted. 2019 follows with 55, then 2018 and 2022 with 42 and 40. 2023 has 38. Those mid-range years are all on the radar for battery and power loss reports. 2024 has only 9 and 2026 has none. Those years are too new to judge, because complaints build up with time on the road. Few filings there say little about how the cars will hold up.

Owner complaints filed with NHTSA under electrical system. Newer model years have had less time to collect complaints.
What goes wrong
Most electrical complaints trace back to the batteries and the power they feed. A warning about the 48-volt or 12-volt battery appears, and then the car loses drive power, refuses to start, or shuts off. Instrument clusters and center screens can go black while driving, taking safety displays with them. Rear camera blackouts and a stop/start system that fails to restart the engine at a light also come up. Many filings in this group name other Mercedes models, so part of the pattern comes from sister cars.
The risk is real. Fire or smoke reports show up in model years 2019 through 2023, including cars that burned while parked or minutes after a start. Several owners describe losing power in traffic or at highway speed. Crash reports exist too, though the 2018 and 2024 ones are mostly about the car surging forward at parking speed. Some burned cars were declared total losses. Many battery failures come early in the car's life, so a newer car is not automatically safe from them.
Symptoms owners report
Battery warning, then power loss
A 48-volt or 12-volt battery message appears, sometimes with a coolant-too-hot alert. The car then loses drive power and coasts to a stop. Some restart normally. Others are dead and cannot be jump-started, often within the first few thousand miles.
Smoke and fire
Owners describe a burning smell, then smoke or flames. Cases include a stop at a light, a remote start, a car parked in a driveway after a 12-volt battery warning, and smoke from under the passenger seat. Several cars were total losses.
Screens and cluster going black
The instrument cluster or center screen blanks while driving. Climate, audio, cameras and driver aids can go with it. One owner reported a black cluster and a failed brake pedal at about 5 mph before hitting a building wall. Dealers often find no codes.
No-start and stop/start failure
Owners report a car that will not start, a 12-volt battery that keeps draining, and a stop/start system that does not bring the engine back at a green light. One owner had to shift to park and restart with a truck approaching.
Rear camera blackouts
The rear camera goes dark when reversing, mostly in 2020 reports. Some owners say a recall exists but their VIN was left off the list, or the recall work is still not done.
Surging at parking speed
Crash reports from 2018 and 2024 describe the car accelerating by itself while nearly stopped, hitting a wall, curbs or a glass door. Owners say the brakes did not stop it, and in 2024 reports no warnings sounded.
When the problems start
Many battery problems show up early. Owners in 2021 describe failures within the first few thousand miles, 2022 reports often start under 3,600 miles, and 2023 owners cite the first 4,000 miles, some on delivery day. One 2020 fire happened with under 15,000 miles on the car. A 2024 C300 stalled at about 8,000 miles. Another 2020 report describes melted engine harness insulation at 36,000 miles.
Repairs and recalls
Owners often say the dealer finds no codes, applies a software update, or sends the car home with the problem returning. In 2021 several waited weeks for replacement 48-volt batteries shipped from Germany. Some 2019 owners could not get recall parts. Federal recall records list C-Class campaigns covering a battery mounting bracket (2018 to 2019), a starter battery pole cover (2018), a signal acquisition module cover (2022), and main fuse boxes (2023 to 2024). Recall repairs are free at dealers. Our data has no repair cost figures for the C-Class.

Checking a used C-Class for electrical problems
- Run the VIN through the federal recall lookup and confirm every electrical recall is completed, not just listed.
- Ask for service records showing any 12-volt or 48-volt battery replacements, and what warnings came before them.
- Start the car cold and check that no battery, coolant or warning messages appear on the cluster.
- Test the center screen, instrument cluster and rear camera for blackouts during a drive of at least 20 minutes.
- Check that stop/start restarts the engine at lights, and smell the cabin and engine bay for burning plastic.
- Ask the seller about any surging or hesitation while parking, and have a mechanic scan for stored fault codes.
43 electrical recalls cover the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. A VIN check shows whether the car you're looking at had its recall work done, plus accident and title history.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class Electrical Problems: common questions
- Which Mercedes-Benz C-Class years have the most electrical problems?
- Model years 2021 and 2020 have the most complaints, with 75 and 64, and the highest rates once sales are counted. 2019 is next with 55. 2024 and 2026 show few or none, but they are too new to treat as better.
- Is it safe to drive a C-Class with an electrical warning?
- Treat battery warnings seriously. Owners report the car shutting off or losing drive power soon after one appeared, sometimes in traffic. A few describe smoke or fire after a battery warning. Have a dealer check it before driving much.
- Does a recall cover C-Class electrical problems?
- Some recalls do. Federal records list C-Class campaigns for the battery bracket, starter battery cover, a trunk moisture cover, pre-fuse box wiring and main fuse boxes, depending on year. Check your VIN, because coverage is by year and build.
- How much does a C-Class electrical repair cost?
- Our data has no reliable repair cost for the C-Class. Recall repairs are free at dealers. Outside a recall, owners describe repeat dealer visits where the fault is not found or comes back, so get a written diagnosis first.
- Do 2022 and 2023 C-Class models still have electrical complaints?
- Yes. Owners of both years report 48-volt and 12-volt battery faults, sudden power loss and black screens, many under 4,000 miles. Recalls for 2022 and 2023 C300 wiring, ground connections and fuse boxes also appear in federal records.
